EBF no poo for 14 days

Should I be worried? Last time he went 7 days.

He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort and his tummy is still soft. He is very windy though and his pumps are smelly.

He's 10 weeks and I have been dairy and soy free for 5weeks due to slow weight gain. His weight gain has been good since eliminating dairy and soy. He's feeding well and his nappies are just as soaking as always.

Has anyone had any similar? When I google all it says is 'constipation in ebf babies is rare' without any real advice.

I would check in with midwife, health visitor or GP. If he is fine in every other way I wouldn't be too concerned but 2 weeks is a long time and it is best to be cautious with babies.

terriblyangryattimes · 12/10/2019 10:55

It will come...
When it does be ready! My daughter was the same and when it happened it was in a car seat which was obliterated along with everything she was wearing and some of the car upholstery.

Actually after that much time I think you need GP. I mentioned it at an appointment I had anyway after 7 days and was told to book in at 10 I think if it didn't change, which I didn't have to do I don't know what they'd have done, but I think at this point you should get it checked out.

Thanks everyone, it obviously would be on a Saturday! I was so sure he would poo yesterday.

@terriblyangryattimes yes, I'm scared to go out and put him in the sling for this reason!

I was told anything up to 2 weeks between poos for bf baby is normal, as there’s very little waste. He’s probably fine if he seems ok but if he hasn’t been by Monday I’d get seen perhaps.

Josephinebettany · 12/10/2019 14:13

My first dd was the same. I used to give her a glycerin suppository after ten days but in hindsight she didn't need it. Some bf babies just use every bit of the bm and have less waste. It'll be a big one when it comes though 🙂 I have since found out it's more common in bf babies than I realised. He's not constipated just his body getting the most from his milk

Thamantha · 12/10/2019 17:53

Mine used to regularly go about two weeks between poos, never in any discomfort - he just didn't poo much. I wish i had those days again as weaning has meant much more frequent and stinky poos.

ParadiseLaundry · 12/10/2019 18:23

Thanks everyone. I actually panicked and called 111 at 1pm but I haven't heard back from them so they mustn't be worried! It's reassuring to know that it's not uncommon but I think as @Solihooley has said I will go to drs on Monday if there's no change.

@Josephinebettany I hope so, before I went df and sf he was having 10 green diarrhoea poos a day so hopefully you're right about keeping it all in to get all the goodness out!

Do any of your babies have stinky wind aswell ? My bf four month old goes 10 days but the wind is horrendous

ClaraLane · 14/10/2019 19:45

@sh13 My DD had terrible wind in between poos and she was EBF. They were so loud and stinky!

dementedpixie · 14/10/2019 19:48

Must be something in the water (or milk!) As there are a couple of posts about the same issue

braw · 14/10/2019 19:59

Hi my DD is on day 9 now and I was recommended to give her cooled boiled water but I'm sceptical. Any joy for you OP? What did your GP advise?

MrsFloraPoste · 14/10/2019 20:21

If you’re worried try 1oz of apple juice (not from concentrate). I read about it in an old book, and ran it by my grandfather who had been a GP all his working life. He said it wouldn’t do any harm.
The poor baby had been grunting and straining but hadn’t been productive for six days. I gave him 1oz of Copella. Twenty minutes later he did the mother of all faecal explosions.
He was a much happier baby after that and it hasn’t happened since.

sh13 · 14/10/2019 20:22

@braw don’t give water if your baby’s breastfed I think you can with forumla in hot weather ? , was your gp quite old ? My gp recommended orange juice an water as much as baby wanted and I’m glad I was skeptical. I didn’t give it baby as when I told my health visitor she was really cross and rang the Docters to complain she said it’s really old advice x

@ClaraLane oh good perhaps it is normal then 😂🤢

ReggaetonLente · 14/10/2019 20:32

Its really normal. Breast milk is tailored to their needs - not much waste. DD'S paediatrician said up to 3 weeks would be no cause for concern.

Saying that though DD got much more regular once i'd been off dairy for a few weeks. It took some time to work through her system.

ParadiseLaundry · 14/10/2019 20:58

Day 16 now and still no poo!

Gp today was very good, she was very knowledgable about breastfeeding and had bf herself.

She wasn't worried. She examined his stomach which was fine and had a look at him. He's happy in himself and pumping but not straining or in pain so was satisfied he wasn't constipated. She said we could give him some lactulose which we've done.

@ParadiseLaundry Good to know thank you for sharing

ParadiseLaundry · 24/10/2019 13:38

Just thought I'd update in case anyone has the same problem in future and searches for the issue because I found hardly any information when I was searching.

We visited the GP again on day 22 when he still hadn't pooed. The most puzzling thing at this point was that he was just so happy! He was smiling all the time at us and strangers, chatting and gurgling all the time too. Definitely not in pain or straining. GP examined him well again and felt his tummy and listened. She could hear normal bowel sounds. She spoke to a DR at the local hospital who asked us to come in the next day so they could examine him.

The next day the Dr at the hospital was just as puzzled, she also agreed he had no blockages or anything. She said they'd like to give him a suppository to get things moving. An hour after the suppository he still hadn't been and I begged them to let us go home. The only reason she agreed because he was just so well in himself.

He finally went a few hours after the suppository, day 24, and it really just looked normal and it wasn't even especially large. So it's still a bit of a puzzle but hopefully this will help anyone else in a similar situation. How did you get on @braw ?

Good idea posting an update @ParadiseLaundry these threads are often unresolved which is frustrating if you've stumbled upon it after frantically googling something!
Can't believe your DS got to day 24! How's he been since then? My DD got to day 11, a few ml of cooled boiled water a few times seemed to work. However she's now on day 6 despite being given water so who the hell knows Confused

Numptydumptycat · 24/10/2019 17:06

Normal for bf babies.

Apolloanddaphne · 24/10/2019 17:13

Breast milk is used so well as a nutritional source by baby that there is almost no waste so no backlog of poo.
