Shoes on babies?

I'm always curious why parents buy shoes for babies who aren't walking.

Babies bones are so soft and must develop much better given the freedom to bend and flex easily.

It just seems a totally unnecessary thing and so expensive! I mean, Nike trainers on a 4 month old!

What's nicer than looking at 10 cutesy little toes.

Kissing them

horrible and a fashion item.

Awful. I also dislike babies that are dressed as mini-adults. As in a new born baby in a checked shirt and jeans, with nike trainers. They look so uncomfortable!

My DD had pre-walkers for when we were outdoors. She always wanted to be on her feet, taking steps holding someones hand. I wasn't prepared for her to do that outside without shoes. So she has fitted, leather pre-walkers - a lovely Kickers plack patent leather ones. She also had a pair of addidas trainers and soft Timberland booties - bought for us, again only worn if cruising outside.

Bare feet all the time indoors, including at nursery. Dd still has bare feet indoors most of time now, as do I.

I have been finding it difficult to get simple clothes for nearly 1 year old dd. I dont want her looking like a mini teenager but that seems to be the majority available. I dont want her wearing fake fur ffs!

DS wasn't walking yet last winter but I had trouble keeping his socks on and his little feet would get cold, so we used Robeez soft shoes kind of like a sock substitute. As soon as it warmed up he went to bare feet. He likes that much better and so do I.

I think there's a big difference between those soft leather shoes (like Daisy Roots?) - are they called cruiser shoes? - for a cruising/standing child, and inflexible Nike trainers on a 6 month old. The former is common sense outdoors, the latter is purely vanity on the part of the parents.

blossomhill · 23/09/2004 19:20

hercules it's the same for my 5 year old dd. I do not want her to wear a boob tube, she doesn't have boobs!

Egypt · 23/09/2004 19:39

well i'm going to dress my dd in the halter neck top that our neighbour bought her along with the matching denim skirt with knickers attached - which are actually seen beneath the skirt as it's actually more of a belt........then i am going to get her ears pierced....and put some chunky gold jewellery around her neck and wrists like i saw on a 6 month old last week........

PicadillyCircus · 23/09/2004 19:41

DS doesn't wear shoes yet; he doesn't walk and so he doesn't need them!

He occasionally wears socks when I can get him to keep them on for longer than 10 seconds...

Miaou · 23/09/2004 19:42

Oooooh, classy Egypt

Are you going out top to toe in Burberry check too?

cellulitequeen · 23/09/2004 19:50

Have just bought ridiculously priced "cruising" shoes for DS, aged 13 months and not walking. Only because I'm conscious of his feet being cold when we're out and about and the pre-walker 12-18 month ones we tried were far too small. When we're at home he's just in his socks.

cellulitequeen · 23/09/2004 19:51

Oh, should say he has clothes on too.

oneofeach · 23/09/2004 19:53

I've just got my DD (10 months) some Daisy Roots (cheap off ebay!) as she pulls her socks off in the pushchair within about 10 seconds and proceeds to suck them! I just want to keep her feet warm. But at any other time it's bare fee.

TracyK · 25/09/2004 12:36

my ds is in baby gap socks most of the time - but i did see some older babies today with little soft shoes on and it looks as if they would maybe help for him to grip as he tries to get his bottom up for crawling - maybe not such a good idea after all!!

MistressMary · 25/09/2004 12:41

Gap socks here for warmth and chewability!
What is the point of shoes til they are walking?
