Is it weird to keep steriliser in baby’s room?

DP and I are at logger heads about when to have kids. He wants them now and I want to wait a little for a variety of reasons including saving money to move to a bigger place. Our kitchen is TINY. Sadly no dishwasher, very little work top space so much so that we do not have a microwave or a toaster as they take up room. We argued last night about where we would put all the stuff that baby’s need esp bottles, steriliser etc. He is adamant that all this could be stored in baby’s bedroom which would be pretty spacious with more surface space. Thoughts?

Well you COULD but it would be quite steamy. I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't though.

Bottles are washed often so they would be in the kitchen often...keeping them in the baby's bedroom would not work. Have you decided breastfeeding isn't an option? I didn't so no judgement from me...but it seems a lot simpler.

Grin It just doesn't work on so many levels

You can sterilised in a pan of boiling water. Bottles for breast milk don't need to be sterilised. As above, if you would like to breastfeed, you don't need to buy any equipment before the baby arrives.

You can just sterilise bottles on the hob in a pan of boiling water - you don't need an actual steriliser. That said, we have a microwave steriliser and a perfect prep machine and it makes bottle feeding a lot easier. I think it would be a pain to keep them in the bedroom as we need water quite often (washing up, filling the steriliser, filling the machine). I also agree that BF would get rid of all those issues but obviously I'm FF myself!

Yeah bf would solve a lot of these issues. I’d definitely try it but i guess just covering all bases and I’d imagine if bf was as success I would only do it for a few months as would be going back to work full time

I don't think keeping a sterliser in the room would work. I have the tommee tippee one (I assume others work the same), and you have to empty the water out every time you use it, so you'd be carrying it to the bathroom? Maybe a cold water steriliser would work better, but you still need to empty that once a day too. What about the microwave sterliser bags? They take up hardly any space, but you'd still need somewhere to keep the bottles.

Perfect prep could work in the baby's bedroom.

But if you've not got space in the kitchen, the baby's room is definitely a viable place.

I definitely don't think bf is less hassle than ff...

Cold water steriliser sat on the cooker hob n into the sink when you’re cooking? Or fill up sink with x amount of water add water and Milton n drop the bottles/dummys back in?

You wouldn’t be making bottles in baby’s room so why add the job of running to boil the kettle, running to get a bottle, building it, back to the kitchen to do the scoops, water in, shake, jug. And there’s likely carpet in the babies room for dropped water/descaling stuff when it comes.

I have ours in the bedroom due to lack of space in the kitchen. It's not a problem.

mindutopia · 07/10/2019 10:06

A steriliser doesn't need to be out all the time. If you decide to bottle feed, then you only need to use it once or twice a day. Just bring it out from storage when you need it and then put it away again. My first was mostly bottle fed and we set up a small table in the kitchen that I stored things on. Mostly, you need it close to where you will be washing up and making bottles. That likely won't be in baby's room. Just pull it out when you need it, sterilise once or twice a day, close bottles up to keep clean until you need them, put steriliser away until the next day.

We kept ours in our bedroom along with the perfect prep for the first few months, obviously we kept the window open and had no problems. Ours steamed away all the water by the time it had finished sterilising but did need cleaning and descaling.

If you get enough bottles to last a day you wouldn't need to use it often.

The bedroom was ideal because it meant we wouldn't need to get out of bed at night.

If you’re worried about not having enough space for a steriliser, you don’t have enough space for a baby. They come with a lot of stuff!! The steriliser is the least of your worries.
