11 month old with no wet nappies?!?!

I’m looking for a bit of help as a google search has left me with heaps of anxiety.

My 11 month old has been vomiting for the last 4 days with Diarrhea. He won’t eat food or bottles and has tiny sips of water/juice here and there but throws up - he has had a couple mouthfuls of porridge and some wotsits today but threw up again. Took him to the doctors two days ago to which the doctor told me to starve him for 48 hours of everything but ice pops(?!) I didn’t do that as I couldn’t bear the hunger cries although I have tried him with the ice pops but again he’s vomiting. Anyway to the bit that’s worrying me, he now hasn’t had a wet nappy since last night (4th) and I know dehydration can be a big issue...

His mouth is wet although he is teething, soft spot and eyes aren’t sunken, temp is averaging around 35.6 he seems okay in himself although he’s only just fell asleep after having a hysterical crying fit which isn’t like him.

Is it time to start worrying as google suggests??

Thanks, a nervous first time mum with a baby who’s never been poorly before!

A and E personally for me

managedmis · 06/10/2019 01:52

Have you called 111?

Blondiee · 06/10/2019 01:55

I’ve not called them no, would you wait until he wakes or call them now?

You need to get him checked out. I'm not in the UK so I'm not sure of the protocol, but with a possibly dehydrated baby I'd be thinking of A&E.

OrangeSwoosh · 06/10/2019 01:59

A&E. Low temperature and no urine output are two warning signs for sepsis

123bananas · 06/10/2019 01:59

A & E he is dehydrated, 12 hours without a wet nappy and he needs to be seen.

OrangeSwoosh · 06/10/2019 02:01

And when you present, tell them you're worried about sepsis. There will be posters all over the place about it.

peachgreen · 06/10/2019 02:03

Yes A&E. I took my baby with suspected dehydration and we were seen very quickly and they were lovely. (She was fine!)

Lipz · 06/10/2019 02:07

Aww poor pet is dehydrated. Happens to my dd a good bit. Once the nappy it's dry they need to go to A&E. They are put on a saline drip and if antibiotics are needed they usually put that through with the drip. The saline drip is amazing, the vomiting usually stops and I find within 24 hours they are rehydrated and eating again. It is advised you go ASAP

Butterflycookie · 06/10/2019 02:18

No wet nappies is a warning sign. Although if he hasn’t been drinking then that could be why. I would definitely get him checked. Take him to a&e

7salmonswimming · 06/10/2019 02:19

I wouldn’t be so relaxed if I were you. I’d be on my way to hospital. Hope your baby gets better soon.

Hollyhobbi · 06/10/2019 02:24

Ex nurse here. Bring your baby to A and E now. Had to bring my soon to be 21 year old to A and E with a vomiting bug. She really perked up a few hours after she started the IV fluids and we were back home after 24 hours.

HereThereIsNoWhy · 06/10/2019 02:32

They need to go to A&E. If you're worried about making a fuss or bothering anyone, you aren't. They need to be seen. Their temperature is low and they are dehydrated.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 06/10/2019 02:37

I'd also take to A and E at this stage. If you're in the slightest bit of doubt then ring out of hours service instead (this is different and way more useful than 111), which should be a local number. Personally though I'd go straight to A and E because this sounds like dehydration even though the soft spot/eyes aren't sunken.

HumptyDumptyHadAGreatFall · 06/10/2019 02:41

As others have said, I'd go to A&E immediately

CannonCaboodle · 06/10/2019 03:06

A&E now.
That temperature isn't normal.

titnomatani · 06/10/2019 03:14

A&E straightaway. You do not want to take any chances with little ones and 4 days of dry nappies is enough to be deemed an emergency. Take him in.

MerryHen · 06/10/2019 09:28

If you haven't already please take him to A&E to be checked.

As others have said the low temperature in addition to the vomiting and low urine output is concerning. Ask them "could it be sepsis?" and they will check, hospitals are really hot on it now. Let us know how he is if you can.

moodybum · 06/10/2019 11:28

@Blondiee how is your son now? Did you go to A&E? How are you, you must be very anxious?

Blondiee · 06/10/2019 15:54

Thank you everyone for your replies, he finally has had one small wee and another Diarrhea nappy but no more vomiting, I took him to the OoH doctors and his temperature was back to normal, they wasn’t really concerned too much and basically told me to take him home and keep trying him with fluids which is what I have desperately been trying to do since our doctors appointment on Thursday and I explained this to them but they’ve told me to continue trying. Fingers crossed he has a wee when he wakes from his nap!

I'd be at the a and e.. Pushing the fact he's not keeping fluids down, no even sips and still sick with ice pops. Nappies are considerably dry (even if he has done a wee or two, it's not enough) better to have them in and have a 2nd or even 3rd opinion (if you are worried, you know your baby better than anyone else, you know what's not normal) than not take them or listen to that 1st doc and it be something serious that's been missed.. I nearly died as a baby from that same advice (starve for x time, do it again, blah) and my diarrhoea and sickness would not of got better from such treatment as my ear wax was leaking inwards (instead of outwards) and was making me incredibly sick, I had to be operated on, no out of hours doctor would have caught that.. (in fact 3 had missed it and gave the advice to repeat starve proceeds).. You know your baby, if in doubt, check it out and don't let them pass you off, until your happy baby is under the best treatment..

Robs20 · 06/10/2019 16:55

I can’t believe the ooh dr is not concerned. My dd had no wet nappies for 18 hours and this was a major warning sign that her kidneys were shutting down. I don’t want to scare you, but she died a couple of hours later (she was in hospital and by the time they realised she was seriously ill it was too late). If he doesnt have wet nappies again in the next couple of hours PLEASE take him to a&e.

managedmis · 07/10/2019 02:01

How is he, op?

redredrobins · 07/10/2019 02:27

When my baby had diarrhoea the health visitor suggested jelly, it is mainly water and sugar so helps stop dehydration. It was the only thing he would eat and definitely helped.
I hope he gets well soon.
