Car seats and isofix base -can I use current isofix base for best car seat

Hi,

Having some general parent confusion (nothing new) about car seats.

Currently have maxi cosy car seat which had from birth. And easy base 2 (which you attach with seatbelt -doesn’t have isofix attachers (yellow things) even though our car has them. -The base was second hand, as long as it’s safe I’m not fussy).

So now we need to go up to next car seat (LO is near 12 months, not at weight limit yet but getting there).

am I still looking at using the isofix base? I would like to have the option of taking her out still in her car seat so I don’t want a fixed seat (for example when she falls asleep in the car she will stay asleep if I take the whole seat out, so I do this so I can get stuff done in the house).

Can I use the current base and just get a new seat? Or do I need to get a whole new seat and isofix setup?

Tried googling it but this query is too complex to find or for my sleep deprived brain to condense into search terms! :-P

Any advice or pointers much appreciated

I don’t think you will be able to get any care seat in that range where you can remove the child and the car seat together.

As far as I know all the next size up are fixed seats. Those bases are for baby carriers only.

The base you have only fits infant carriers, so you won’t be able to get a bigger seat with that one.

You can get some bases that detach from the car seat for older children, like the maxi Cosi family fix. It’s compatible with the pearl child seat, but that’s only forward facing, so not as safe. Also, the bigger seats are heavy to detach and move around, not sure how you’d manage it with a child in it and not wake them up.

As others have said you don’t get a next stage up seat that is carryable into the house.

As for whether you use the base- Maxi cosi pearl is the next stage from the same company, but it needs a 2 way family fix base.

I can recommend a Joie 360 as your next stage, mine has been really good.

This one looks like you can remove it from the car? www.maxi-cosi.co.uk/car-seats/pearl-pro-i-size Or am I missing something? (Likely)

Oh wait, no handle....

What do parents do then when the baba falls asleep in the car and they arrive home?! Set up a monitor in the car 😱😂

Go to drive through costa and enjoy the peace!

TheSunAlsoRises · 04/10/2019 21:17

Sit in the car and read Mumsnet usually.

MadeForThis · 04/10/2019 21:19

Yep. Enjoy the peace and quiet in the car.

ZogorElmer · 04/10/2019 21:30

@Zenlifeforme you can technically remove the seat from the base in that one- however I’ve had that seat and there is no way I could carry it inside with a child in, it is so heavy!

Madwomanuptheroad · 04/10/2019 21:35

You can keep her in her existing car seat until she reaches her weight limit.
After that car seats are fixed. You can get rearfacing one (much safer but quite expensive) or a forward facing one.
Remember not every seat fits in every car and you need to find someone who is trained to actually check the fit.
As a compromise in terms of safety and forward facing the kiddy car seats are quite good - certainly better than the ones with five point belt and they are easier to move between cars.
However once the baby outgrows the baby carrier you can't carry them about in the car seat. You simply lift the sleeping baby out of the seat and sit them in the buggy/ carry them in the house and put them into bed, on sofa or whatever. They either waken or sleep on. Leaving a baby sleeping alone in the car is never safe, even with a monitor.

Hey, I have the Maxi Cosi seat that's in your link and you can take it out of the car on its own but you cant carry baby/child in it unfortunately. It's a great seat though!
I just wait in the car while she sleeps or sometimes I get her out and she stays asleep the odd time!

Ah thank you all, that’s really helpful pointers and info. (thank god for drive through Costa in that case 😉).

No I would never leave her alone in the car, that’s my (bad) sense of humour there.

It’s funny old game motherhood isn’t it. If you ever start to get the feeling you’ve cracked something it means something is about to change 😂🥰.

You also need to keep her rear facing until 15 months legally
