How many nappies do you change at night for a newborn?

So my baby is nearly a month, and I'm not sure if I'm being lazy but I only ever get up to change his nappy once in the night around 2ish and its normally very full of wee, only occasionally a poo and then leave it until the morning, where again it's very full. Occasionally I do also leave it all night because it's just so much easier to feed and stay in bed (we have a next 2 me crib so I can stay in bed for night feeds) Blush
How often does everyone else change baby nappies in the night?

I changed at the 11pm feed, then only again if either they'd pood or if during the middle of the night feed they fell asleep halfway through- a nappy change would wake them enough to finish the feed.

Mintjulia · 03/10/2019 18:45

Once in the night unless the nappy starts to leak. As long as your baby's skin Is dry & not getting sore.

A sleeping baby is a precious thing, don’t make unnecessary work for yourself. Smile

When he was a newborn I changed after every feed as he was usually pooing at every feed. Then I only started changing it when it was actually full so maybe 2 times a night.

Just to make it clear that's when he was waking up. No chance I would change it if he was sleeping 🤣🤣🤣🤣

ElspethFlashman · 03/10/2019 18:50

Only ever changed poos during the night. My midwife advised that modern nappies are so dry and absorbant that they're fine and it's more important to let the child sleep.

We always got those super Pampers babydry ones in the "+" range and never had any nappy rash. We did slather on a lot of Vaseline in fairness.

Sunshinegirl82 · 03/10/2019 19:34

I only changed poos in the night. Usually changed it at the last evening feed 10/11pm and from then on for poos only.

Well, at every feed I'd just see if the nappy feels heavy or if baby smells (obviously). Sometimes that would be like 6 changes on a night, other times once or not at all. In the morning and at bed time I'll change nappy and do a top and toe wash just to make baby feel happy and comfortable, but only bath once a week and only change otherwise as necessary.

DappledThings · 03/10/2019 20:53

Only ever for poo or if leaked through.

Mrscog · 03/10/2019 20:56

We had a next to me crib - I kept a towel, nappies and wipes at the end of our bed and used to change them in bed to save getting out of bed at all.

Sleeplease · 03/10/2019 20:59

I use reuseables and only change if I am woken up by my 4 week old doing a huge noisy poo or if I feed him and smell poo in the nappy. It has a liner so is dry against the skin so I don't see any reason to wake all of us up to change

BumpLoading · 03/10/2019 21:05

Ok great I'll just do poop ones then for now and see how we get on. Think I'll need to get quicker and better at nappies before I change them in our bed as we've had a few wees / poos mid change and dont think my DH would love that in the bed whilst hes sleeping Grin

Keep a changing mat under the bed or crib and Also a spare muslin handy as they are great for mopping up poo and wee messes (plus bonus they go in the washing machine so not just using mountains of cotton wool or wipes). At night I tend to dress mine in just one layer (vest in summer, baby grow in winter) so that helps save on time and washing too. I found it easier to use wipes at night and then cotton wool and water during the day, but my middle child's skin was too sensitive and I used flannels and water instead and then water wipes which were expensive (re-usable wipes are better than flannels but I used what I had). So it does depend a bit on the child and how sensitive their skin is.

BumpLoading · 04/10/2019 00:03

His skins not sensitive as always use wipes and hes been find with them and do pur on a barrier cream after most changes and ges had no nappy rash yet!

Only if baby poos or has nappy rash.

Idea86 · 04/10/2019 09:50

I used to change the kid pretty much at every feed. I was always anal about them getting nappy rash, plus I figured I'd be uncomfortable with a wet bottom.

FriedasCarLoad · 04/10/2019 09:57

I changed my baby at every feed, but I was using cloth nappies.

notmytea · 04/10/2019 12:19

FWIW cloth wipes are so much better than disposable wipes, you only need one and it cleans up everything!

Also try using a bundler for nights, I'm putting my boy in one = no poppers!

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 04/10/2019 12:38

A million times (every feed) when she was tiny as I had antibiotics so she 💩 all the time. Now at 10 weeks never over night, except for a poo. As long as the nappy has absorbed all the wee and their skin is dry then it’s fine.

BumpLoading · 04/10/2019 21:55

@notmytea what's a bundler? Blush is that a sleeping bag?

I think the pp means something like this:

BumpLoading · 05/10/2019 07:27

I didn't know that was a thing but it seems so much more practical than a sleeping bag! I'll have to get some Smile
