What did you use after sleep bags?

Firstly, how long did you use sleep bags for?
Basically, DS just turned one. He has always had a sleep bag for bed except during heatwaves. He knows when he goes in it that it's time for bed.
We have recently moved house and lost a number of sleep bags (I wasn't able to pack as DS went into hospital the day before we moved!) so we have been left with 3 1tog bags, one of which has just broken and another was wet through last night. Our tumble dryer is dead so I can't wash and dry it by bed time.
Cue panic!
We wondered if instead of spending loads on the next size up/tog up for bags, we should switch to layers and blankets. But how have people done the transition? What kind of blanket do you use? I really don't want DS to start climbing out of his cot at night and he moves around so much in his sleep. I plan to wait until he's asleep to put a blanket over him but I'm unsure what's considered safe at this age? I was so up to speed on the sids advice for newborns, but at this stage all the advice seems conflicting. Help me out!!

Ds was in a sleeping bag until 2 and a half at which point he went into a single bed

BlackInk · 03/10/2019 11:32

We use a cot/cotbed sized duvet from about 9 months. I think that's still considered safe? DD was in a proper bed by about one though as she was a climber!

randomsabreuse · 03/10/2019 11:38

Used a bag until out of cot at 2.5. Bag limits climbing and both of mine have been "athletic" sleepers with a tendency to migrate around the cot - DS (10m) most often sleeps sideways and often ends up at the opposite end!

My DS is 3 and still uses a sleeping bag. He's in a bed and unzips himself in the morning when he's ready to get up. He's a fidgety sleeper and he's happy in the sleeping bag, they're part of his bedtime routine so happy to pay more for bigger ones.

UnaOfStormhold · 03/10/2019 11:46

I'd go for the footed sort of sleeping bag once they start to walk up until they're dry at night. Vaenait and Slumbersac for example

dementedpixie · 03/10/2019 11:47

Duvets are suitable from age 1 so you could use sleeping bag or blankets or lightweight duvet (max tog 4.5)

DappledThings · 03/10/2019 12:37

Ditto!

Samosaurus · 03/10/2019 12:39

My son is 2.5 and is still in sleeping bags. He’s about to go into a single bed though so we’ll get him some nice bedding and he’ll stop using the sleeping bags then.

Thegracefuloctopus · 03/10/2019 13:18

I'm sencing I should just invest in more sleeping bags... Hmm

You can use a duvet from 1 but we kept sleeping bags until about 2. She's 3 and still kicks the duvet off so maybe should have kept the sleeping bags!

OddBoots · 03/10/2019 13:26

I would stick to the bags over the winter months at least. I'm not sure where you normally get your sleeping bags from but TKmaxx normally has them for a bit cheaper than most places if you can get there.

managedmis · 03/10/2019 13:27

Both mine had small duvets from age 1. Both were in sleep sacks prior to that

incontrolofmyownlife · 03/10/2019 13:28

We used a duvet now at 18 months, it's cold in our house!

Stopped using the sleeping bags after she banged her head in the cot a couple of times trying to stand up and getting her legs tangled in it Grin she sleeps much better now too.

BentleyBelly · 03/10/2019 14:54

Dd was in sleeping bags until she went into a bed at about 2.5. Ds is still in them at 23 months with no plans to stop as we can't keep covers on him due to his wriggling and he likes to be really snuggly warm at night.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 03/10/2019 17:07

I've just got 3 sleeping bags from my local mums group for a fiver each, so you could be cheap and cheerful this way?

SinkGirl · 03/10/2019 17:09

My boys are 3 and still in sleeping bags! They love them. But then they are autistic and anything loose in their cots gets thrown out so a duvet wouldn’t last 30 seconds.

You can get sleeping bags with feet holes for kids that get in and out of bed - ours prevent ours from climbing so we stick the normal ones!

Ours are from mothercare but lots of brands do 18 - 36 months sizes

SinkGirl · 03/10/2019 17:12

I bought our current winter ones from mothercare in the sale during the summer - it cost me £24 for four, amazing bargain as they’re so expensive normally (think each set of 2 was originally £35-40). They’re so lovely and soft too, DH wants one and so do I!

BertieBotts · 03/10/2019 17:12

I just stop once they stop kicking covers off. Have always had blankets around for the odd night. Then DS1 used a lightweight summer duvet (it's warmer for them because they are little) and DS2 is currently using a blanket like this: www.amazon.co.uk/two-sided-antiallergenic-Oeko-Tex-Certificate-manufactured/dp/B01M5EEO80/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

BertieBotts · 03/10/2019 17:16

Can never be arsed with sleeping bags TBH, they always fight going into them and it's so expensive to keep buying them as they grow. It's just that they are less annoying than redoing blankets 1000 times a night when they are tiny.

OverthinkingThis · 03/10/2019 17:16

We switched to a cotbed duvet at 18 months rather than buy a load more sleeping bags

SinkGirl · 03/10/2019 17:21

I guess we haven’t had to replace therm as often as most people as our boys are small - they’re 3 and have just moved into the 18-36 month size.

I got second hand 0-6 month ones from nearly new sales when they were babies, then got 6-12 and 12-18 month ones from ikea which weren’t too bad, and those lasted til they were 3 so overall the cost hasn’t been awful. I did have to buy two 18-36 months really thin grobags from amazon during the heatwave which were bloody pricey but will no doubt still fit next summer and maybe the summer after at this rate, they’re huge.

Thegracefuloctopus · 03/10/2019 17:25

I've just spent 15quid on a sainsbury one, hoping that will get us through for a while thanks to my trusty new tumble dryer then we can ask for more at Xmas time. It seems like there's this annoying inbetween stage where grow bags arnt ideal but blankets don't stay on either. Ultimately, I've realised I'll spend quite a lot for a better night's sleep!

My 15 month old is still in a sleep bag. He tends to try to throw off loose things and can end up upside down in his cot so planning to keep for as long as possible

Luxembourgmama · 03/10/2019 18:19

Cot sized duvet from ikea

Caterina99 · 03/10/2019 20:41

Yes my DD is 2 next week and is still in her cot. We moved from sleeping bags to cot duvet a few months ago. Seems to be going fine. Sometimes she sleeps on top of it but she’s figuring out how to get back under it if she needs to
