Baby in pain in BabyBjorn?

Hey - new dad here. I've tried putting my 12 week old in our BabyBjorn twice now, and both times she has completely freaked out. I loosened the straps fully both times so it definitely wasn't an issue with her being crushed, and I've watched three YouTube videos on how to put them in, as well as (obviously) reading the included instructions, so I'm pretty confident I'm putting her in right. Had the wife help me second time so baby was completely supported.

My baby girl cries in a different way to the way she normally does when she's hungry or tired etc. - it's as if she's in pain - higher pitched and she has only done it once before - last time I tried to put her in. She's then almost inconsolable afterwards.

Any advice before I throw it away? She was in a sleepsuit second time so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. Might it be her hips?

Cheers in advance

Carrying babies is wonderful but Baby Bjorn's are awful things. Please get yourself to your nearest Sling Library for advice and finding several to hire before you buy. No Baby Bjorn's in site.

It also might be worth going to a drop in Health Visitor clinic, and asking them to check babies hips. You can Google signs of hip dysplasia yourself, any uneven leg creases? if you lie her down on her back on the changing mat and pull her knees up, are they level? Was she breech?

I’m not surprised they’re awful carriers.

Look at the Ergo carriers with newborn insert or go to a sling library & try out different ones.

Baby Bjorn's are usually known as 'crotch danglers' in the baby wearing world. I would invest in a proper carrier, and as pp suggested, check for signs of hip dysplasia.

Go to a sling library and try her in a few different ones. I can imagine those baby bjorn carriers are uncomfortable!

Babybjorns have a bad rep but tbh my baby loves being in ours. I’ve used an ergo and a stretchy wrap for our other babies but this time my back won’t take it, and the Bjorn with extra back support is the only way I can carry. Have you tried facing her outwards? Again, prepare for the gasps of horror, but dd loves it this way.

MumofTinies · 03/10/2019 11:03

Have you got a sling library near you? I had a baby Bjorn with my first and both me and DS hated it. I've had a great experience carrying my second as we found a sling that suited us both through a sling library.

I would also get her hips checked as PP said

Good luck

Assuming it's not the "BabyBjorn One" and it's one of the originals then yes they are terrible for babies hips and she could possibly be in pain. Go to a sling library and try some styles. You can pick up second hand carriers very cheap on facebook.

I got rid of my new model BabyBjorn as it put DS in an awful position, with his legs dangling down and hurt my back.. He was never really happy in it. We then got and Ergobaby Omni 360 and he loves it, his legs are in the 'M' position as they should be. Its so much more supportive on my back too. He's 1 now and I still use it regularly.

moreismore · 03/10/2019 11:05

Just to say there is nothing inherently wrong with baby Bjorns as long as you don’t use them forward facing. If they’re always facing in they will be in hip healthy frog leg position.

tyrannosaurus79 · 03/10/2019 11:05

Thanks everyone for the replies. No signs of hip dysplasia - both legs are level, no uneven creases, very happy baby usually. Will get her checked out though just for peace of mind.

No idea that BabyBjorn had such a bad rep. Was a gift from a friend who is also a mum so assumed it was legit. Kinda like carrying her on my shoulder anyway so will stick with that for now.

Thanks again.

I think at 12 weeks it’s most likely that she isn’t keen on it yet. It’s a new thing. I’d keep trying when she’s in a relaxed mood. A soft sling may be an option. Also meaning no offence-any difference if mum wears it?

galvantula · 03/10/2019 11:07

What type of baby bjorn is it? I think they do proper ergonomic ones now as well as the narrow based ones shown in the graphic posted above.

If a sleep suit is pretty snug it can pull on their wee feet regardless of the sling type.

DappledThings · 03/10/2019 12:39

What everyone else said. BBs are awful. I was given two and gave them away again straight away.

A sling library visit is really valuable. they will let you try all sorts and make sure you are using them all correctly.

tyrannosaurus79 · 03/10/2019 13:35

Brilliant, thanks all. Going to my local sling library next week.

I had a caboo sling and my DD was never very fond of it or any other that we used. She wasn't as upset as you've described yours to be, but she has never been very keen on being in a sling!

I echo what others have said re the awfulness of the Baby Bjorn crotch dangler!!! You might need to go for separate clothing rather than a babygro when using carrier also. More comfy for little one.
