DS is 2.4 and very good talker. We are on day 10 of potty training (well he won't use the potty so it's the toilet) and on the whole it has been quite successful. We have had a few days with no accidents and the most accidents in one day is about 4. However, sometimes he will have a good spell and tell me he needs a wee wee and we manage to get there on time but most of the time I just have to take him to the toilet every hour or so. Usually if I ask him if he needs he just says, 'No.' Also he has only done about 3-4 poos on the toilet the whole time.

Basically, is this normal? How long before he will tell me more reliably when he needs etc.?
I also have a 1yr old and we haven't left the house in 2 weeks cos I don't think he's ready to go out yet (apart from short walk to park).

We are using sticker charts and he gets a special treat for telling me he needs and doing a wee on the toilet and for doing a poo on the toilet.

What should I do?

give up. 2.4 is very young for a boy. my ds is 3.2 and we are just getting the hang of it. sounds like you are the one being trained, not him! there is no shame in not being ready

Have to say he sounds like he's doing fine!

We started our ds at 2.3 as he was taking his wet nappy off in the morning when he woke, was good verbally so we could involve him in what was happening. He also grew out of the potty very quickly as he wanted to 'wee like daddy' so we let him. He got there in about 3-4 weeks? (I think, I can't quite remember!) for the wees but still having the odd accident, especially when were out and on long journeys where he refused to wee in his nappy. (We only used nappy's for journey's -pants the rest of the day) I don't think there is a set age
more just when you fell your child is ready.

The poos have been moe difficult and it's only really started happpening in the last few weeks since we let him sleep at night with no nappy. He would save his poos till he had his nappy on and wouldn't poo at all on the toilet. We talked with him about what we could do and he was really enthusiastic about being a'big boy'. The first week we had 3 nights dry, 4 nights wet, the second was better and we haven't had any accidents for weeks now. He takes himself to the toilet during the night and is even attempting to wipe his bottom!

Personally I think you're doing fine

thanks muppetgirl, I don't really want to give up. He starts playgroup in a few weeks and this is the last time I'm going to have him at home all the time for so many weeks until next summer, by which time he'll be almost 3.5 so I'd rather do it now.

Plus I thought that once you'd started the worst thing you can do is give up. I just wondered how long it would be before he has enough control to start doing all our normal things again!!

if you are happy taking him to the potty every hour then thats fine too

i like the no stress lazy way of potty training but everyone has to find what works for them. we only had to stay in a couple of days because ds is older, has worked this way with all 3 of mine. good luck
