Ranitidine cancer fears - is anyone else worried??

Hi all
I have my baby ranitidine last year as she had reflux when she was born.
Just read in the news about how sales in some countries are being suspended.
Is anyone else worried they gave / giving it to their babies?
Xx

I didn't give it to my dc, but I have certainly taken enough of it myself.

Looking at the BBC website it seems the potential issue is not to do with the actual medicine, but with some sort of impurity eith some brands namely zantac and that is in the US.

This makes me feel a little less worried, but I will certainly keep my eye out for more news.

We didn’t use the Zantac brand - it was generic ranitidine I guess in a standard brown bottle.
Looks like the MHRA isn’t doing anything in the UK at the moment but I still feel a little guilty now about giving it to DD x

I mentioned it to my pharmacist yesterday. Her little girl was on it too. Seems like there’s still
No recall in the UK though and even in the US they are not telling people to stop using it, just recalling from stores.

@Blabbermouth93 how long has your youngest been taking it and how long did your toddler take it for? X

I’m petrified, my son was on it for a week and a half last year.

Cutesbabasmummy · 28/10/2019 12:00

My son was on it from 2 - 9 months. It was generic in a plain plastic bottle. I hasn't heard anything about cancer before I'd seen this.

LoisLittsLover · 28/10/2019 12:07

Xantac is made in a different place to generic ranatadine and the concern is not about the 'recipe ' being carcenogenic but impurities being in xantac therrfore the risk to those in generic ranatadine is no bigger than any other medication

List of specific tablets recalled here
It's a few specific tablets from 2 main suppliers. Liquid formulations usually given to small children and higher doses for prescriptions are not affected.
NDMA is present in smoke, cured meats, some cosmetics/toiletries. Although structurally NDMA is a likely carcinogen based on in-silico and rodent studies, there have been NO proven human cases.

This is a belt and braces recall because the drug is so widely taken worldwide and is (in the OTC cases particularly) for a relatively mild condition. Thus the risk/benefit is skewed toward the risk.
Please don't panic about liquid formulations you may have given your babies. The impurity has not been found in liquid formulations, or the higher dose prescription meds.
Again: no human cases ever recorded: it's a theoretical risk.

I’m super worried!!! My daughter has been taking 20 mg a day for 6 months!!! Since she was born… panicking

ODFOx · 14/02/2023 13:46

Ranitidine was taken off the market globally back in early 2020.

So no one has prescribed it for your baby in the last 6 months. I'm sorry you are worried but you have misunderstood.

EO2022 · 27/02/2025 08:07

I believe it is the liquid as well as the tablets. It's because it can break down at hugh temperatures and NMDA created.
