Baby with cold

Help please! My little one (5 months) is hardly sleeping as they have a cold. The only way I could get her sleeping last night was on me as she just screamed & screamed in the crib. Which obviously meant no sleep for me 😔. Can anyone share any tips for how to get babies to sleep with a cold? And how long they tend to last?
Thank you 🙂

My DS (9m) is just getting over a cold right now and throw in some teething for good measure and we have been right where you are the past few nights. Calpol plug in works a treat for us. Lots of snufflebaby (vics) on their chest. We take it in turns when he is poorly and we'll do 4 hour shifts. I'll set myself up with the iPad and 4 hours seems manageable. DH will then come in and do the next 4 hours. Means we both get some sleep at least. 3 bad nights and I think we are through the worst! Good luck

The calpol plugin has helped us plus it smells amazing. Could you tilt her crib slightly by putting books or something under the legs? A slight raise may help her feel less congested. We also used saline drops up his nose before bed but they are a pain to get in and short lasting.

Pillow under the head of the mattress to raise it, calpol plug in definitely and we also use one of those sucky things to get the mucus out her nose which is totally gross but helps them breathe

All that PPs have suggested and also you could try taking her into a bathroom with the shower on really hot to create an impromptu steam room. Also keep her dosed up with Calpol if she seems really upset/uncomfortable.

My DD is just getting over a cold so you have my sympathies!

Calpol, nasal spray, raising the head of the mattress.

My 8 month old started waking up crying for hours during the night when he had a cold. He wasn't a great sleeper before either, but he nearly broke me! My husband helped at the weekend so I kept my sanity. We tried the controlled crying in the end after a week of not sleeping much and he slept better last night. Not sure if it will last!

There is a charity called cry-sis, have a look at their website, and if everything else fails, you can try and give them a call.

Calpol plug in made a massive difference for my DD. Also elevate her cot so she’s not so flat as everything collects when she’s lying down and during the day put her as upright to sleep as you can while you’re there to keep an eye.
Snuffle babe on the bottom of the feet is supposed to work too and a little on her baby gro at the top and some calpol at bedtime which will also help her sleep.
It’ll pass in a couple of days just like ours.

Thank you! And yes we are having the teething too so it’s really not fun :-(
I’ve just been out to boots to stock up on the cold remedies!
I was worried about letting her sleep on me as don’t want to create a bad habit but guess I’ll have to go with it for the moment as she just will not settle in her crib at all.
Good luck with your little one & hopefully they are much better now :-) x

Mine had a cold and bad overnight cough at about four months and I went to the GP who said the cough can last up to three weeks! It took her two weeks to shake off her cough but she would only sleep on me. It was tough, we just gave her calpol and had to weather it through. Try to console yourself it's good for her immune system to build up immunity through this, from my experience she will just suddenly be right as rain. Can you get anyone to watch her during the day so you can get a few hours of sleep?
