Squeaky / grunty newborn

Just wanted to check if it's normal for babies to be so squeaky and grunty? My 3 week old will squeak really loudly and grunt (kind of like a pig?) after a feed once I put him down and he seems asleep?

Not sure if it's just normal or if somethings wrong with him Confused

Don't worry, its completely normal. Babies are very noisy little things!

BikeRunSki · 29/09/2019 00:53

Normal

riotlady · 29/09/2019 01:06

Normal! I remember googling “newborn pig noises” or something to that effect the first night in the hospital xD

Yes, I watched 3 Jurassic Park films in a night with the current baby and the dinosaurs sounded remarkably familiar. I’m a bit jealous of the putting down bit as I have a Velcro baby.

BumpLoading · 29/09/2019 03:41

Ok good! Haha yes he is a bit dinosaur too Grin

He only gets put down once I've held him for a bit and think hes asleep, which is what confused me once the pig noises started lol

No-one tells you these details do they?
When my daughter was born it was the projectile vomiting of a whole feed that terrified me!
I ran to the nurses on the maternity ward, absolutely convinced she was dying!

Ah, love those piglet snuffly noises!

Squeakybubbles26 · 29/09/2019 04:17

My gosh completely normal, when DD1 was a baby we used to worry about the noises she made especially as she slept over time we needed ear plugs! They are definitely noisy little things ☺️

BumpLoading · 29/09/2019 04:24

Haha no I rang 111 when he projectile vomited but thankfully that's only happened once so far Blush

Haha I may invest in some earplugs that's a good idea!

Tilt the cot at 45°

Invest in a humidifier because if your baby gets a cold grunting will be off the chart

Mother of grunters here. DS sounded like an angry pterodactyl, DD like the Wights off Game of Thrones. Both came out of it 12-14weeks.

You will attune to normal grunts and be able to sleep through normal noise whilst being alert to noises where they need attention. Don’t use earplugs if you can.

BumpLoading · 29/09/2019 09:34

That's a good idea, I've got the crib tilted a little bit but maybe it needs a bit more then! And think I'll invest in a humidifier, I saw them on a few baby lists but never understood why I'd need one!

This is why my son is know as The Piglet, because he was so oinky when he was tiny!

BumpLoading · 29/09/2019 11:00

Haha that's a cute nickname! Glad lots of other babies make animal noises too and my babys normal Grin

My DS was soooo noisy but it ended up being part of a dairy intolerance. He also had other symptoms like trouble feeding/crying/arching back etc but actually the grunting cleared up as soon as I was dairy free. I know 2 other babies the same who were noisy due to dairy.

BumpLoading · 29/09/2019 22:34

Ahh he does arch his back alot! Hes a very good feeder though, how did you find out about the dairy intolerance pancakes22?

Really loud squeaking may be laryngomalacia, have a listen to some you tube videos. DS had tracheomalacia and made some unusual noises.

sandybeaches74 · 29/09/2019 22:43

I'm sure it isn't this (and even if it is, nothing to worry about) but my DS had a squeak when he took a breath. I noticed it at 4 weeks and it got progressively louder. I did a bit of googling and came up with laryngomalacia which is where the larynx hasn't hardened fully before birth. So when they breathe in, the tissue is floppy and causes the noises. The doctors diagnosed him and although he sounded so loud sometimes, they said that he didn't need any intervention.

It got worse before it got better and was better by 2.5.

He's now 8 and you wouldn't even know he ever had it.

Mitebiteatnite · 29/09/2019 22:48

Just thought I'd add that, while snuffling little piglet type noises are totally normal if they originate from their nose, grunting that sounds like it's coming from their chest isn't. If they are grunting when they breathe in and you can see their throat or ribs sort of sucking in, it's a sign they are struggling for breath.

But yes, snuffly little snorts are very normal, and exceptionally cute Smile

hihohihohiy · 29/09/2019 23:16

Probably normal but do keep an eye (or ear) on it, as if it gets worse it could be stridor (high pitched squeaky) which could be reflux or as pp said laryngomalacia which is not common but can happen in babies. Agreed, look for recession which is where skin goes in at the neck or chest when breathing. If you notice this then do definitely go to the GO to check!

Pomfluff · 30/09/2019 00:21

Sounds normal and be sure to film some of those squeaky noises on your phone! I don't know exactly when my baby stopped making them (around 3-4 months?) and I Iove watching old videos to hear those adorable newborn grunts.

BumpLoading · 30/09/2019 07:49

Oh dear lots of things it could be then! He doesn't seem to struggle to breathe or his skin doesnt suck in but I'll keep an eye out next time hes grunty to see where it seems to come from!

@BumpLoading it was recommended by my breastfeeding consultant to give it a try because he was very fussy on boob pulling on and off, crying on the boob, high pitched pain squeals, arching back and then the really loud grunts at night time. I did a 2 week trial cutting it out thinking it wasn't doing anything and then had a test yoghurt and the screams were awful so have been dairy free every since

BlahBlahBlahh · 30/09/2019 22:47

My DS is 12 weeks and still grunts away! 🙈
