Hi all,

I'm mum to one beautiful baby boy now aged 13 weeks. He is the picture of health, ebf and on the 80th percentile for weight and height.

He has always spit up a lot and occasionally vomits. Our health visitor and GP have both said this is not a problem as it seems to cause him no discomfort and he has gained weight well.

The last few days he has woken up screaming like he is in agony. I will pick him up and comfort him immediately (sometimes I'm actually already holding him) but nothing will soothe him. He will cry / scream solidly for a few mins, settle into sobs and then suddenly start screaming again. I feel awful when this happens as I can't do anything to help him when he's clearly pained by something. I've tried winding him loads after feeds in case it's his stomach as he did go through a stage of twisting and grunting in his sleep as though he had bowel wind and then he would sleep much better when he got it out but nothing is working :-(

Currently sat holding him upright against me as that seems to settle him best but then he gets too hot (he's naked atm) and wakes up.

Please help, I feel so desperate to make him feel better. He's my first baby so I have no idea what's going on. Tempted to give him some calpol before he wakes again in an attempt to help him a little.

Sorry I meant to say he also seems to not be feeding as much this week, obviously he is getting older so I don't know if it's that or if something else is going on? He's still having a feed but just not as much as he used to say a couple of weeks ago.

Acid reflux
Keep him upright for a while after a feed or try gaviscon

Beat thing is raising the mattress he sleeps on with a towel underneath so head above stomach at all times - never lie flat

It could be lots of things... not too early for teeth, my DS has first at 14 weeks. Could be a virus. Could be reaction to 12 week jabs maybe? Or if he’s feeding less I bet you have a bit of oversupply. If he’s feeding for a short time he’s prob getting too much foremilk-is he having frothy green poos? You could try hand expressing a bit before he feeds and only feeding one side at a time and see if that helps.

Also a warm bath and some gentle tummy massage and knees to chest might help shift some wind

Think it could be reflux as he is happiest uptight but then wind seems to be bothering him too with his stomach. I've tried bicycle legs, tummy massages and pressing his legs bent up against him but nothing seems to help him go.

I'm going to try and hold him upright after all feeds for an hour or so and see if things improve.

There is a bug doing the rounds at a couple of our baby classes so maybe it's just that.

I just feel completely useless as his mum when he's in pain and I can't do anything. Just want to do a good job as silly as it sounds !

Have you tried infracol before feeding. You can get in boots etc.
I’ve been a nanny for 24 years and swear by it if I have colicky or reflux baby.

There are some good videos on YouTube for getting wind out. I used to have a routine: upright and straight, then lying flat, then lying on each side, then bicycling, then feeding. Dentinox or infacol every feed.

There's a gadget that -ahem- manually helps release wind. Never tried it tho.

Sometimes they cry as they don't like to wee. There's nothing you can do, i don't think xx
