Has anyone's child had gas for sedation at BCH?

I used to work at BCH on the Medical Day Unit where we had children coming for MRI scans all the time, usually about 5 a day.

They were either sedated with medicine or they were given a general anaesthetic.

I have known gas to be used though?!

You may get more replies if you post in Children's Health.

I assume you're looking for reassurance/success stories for using gas for sedation generally, not just at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

I hope it goes well.

Firstly, BCH is lovely - my son is a very regular patient and having yet another op there tomorrow.

Re gas, at that age I used to hold my son on my lap as they held the mask on his face to go to sleep. It was fine, just try not to breathe too much gas in yourself as it nearly sent me to sleep too on one occasion!!

Something like chloral hydrate might work better than gas or even propofol which works it's way out if the body easily..... my DS has had lots of scans and procedures and gas has never been used!
