A position has turned up for me to work in a local nursery as a support assistant for a little boy with Down Syndrome. I have absolutley no "professional" experience but my 5.5 yr old DD has DS so I obviously have hands on knowledge.
The position is only for a year until the little boy starts school and is only for 6 hours a week. TBH it seems idea for me to slot back into "work" after having the children although financially it is hardly worth the effort because of Tax Credits!
BUT the nursery mentioned that if I wanted to they were pretty confident I could get my NVQ2 whilst there, so at least after the year, if I decided to take things further, I would be up the first tread of the ladder.
Can anyone advise me what this actually includes? How easy would it be to do in the 6 hrs per week or if there would be much written coursework on top of the practical.
Any input would be much appreciated.

i'm currently doing an nvq though in another subject. my nvq is quite manageable to do and i imagine you would easily be able to fit in the written work involved.

also you'd get a qualification out of it, it sounds great - go for it!

My mum did and nvq 2 in health and social care or something similar and i think she used to spend at most an evening a week on it.

im have an nvq 3 in caring for children and young people, and an nvq2 in beauty therapy,i am also a qualified nvq assessor.
it is pretty much all written work, and then your assessor will come in and witness you working on several occations. your written work is you simply writing what you do and why you do it. the idea is that you can prove in your written work you know why you do what you do.
so you can write case sudies etc. i would say 6hrs is plenty. plus you cant fail, you will just get asked to make alterations to your work until it can be signed off. it really is quite straight forward, the biggest problem i find is people think its more difficult than it is, you know all the answers cos you do it everyday!!!

Thank you. I have decided to go for it- left it back in the hands of the nursery now!!!
I am trying to think of it as a learning experience rather than employment because of the low financial gain!

mimi03- I did an NVQ2 in beauty therapy about 10 years ago now. Did one full day a week at college though, I was only working part time then and that was before I had the kiddiewinks!!
