At what age do I no longer need a bed guard?

My daughter is 4.5 and for the last 2 years has slept in a bed without sides that's very low to the floor, so she wouldn't hurt herself if she fell out. We're just about to move her to a proper single bed - do you think I need a bed guard for her? It seems odd to have a bed guard at almost 5 years old, but the new bed looks so high in comparison to her old one! I suppose all kids are different sleepers but do other people use bed guards at this age?

We took dd's off her toddler bed about 4 weeks ago, she's 2.9 and has fallen out once - last night.

I never used bed guards for DS1 or DS2 - DS1 went into a proper single bed at just under 2yrs old, DS2 went into his at 3.

Sorry, but on seeing your title I really wanted to say if you're old enough to post on here, you can probably cope without one by now......

PMSL at Attila!

Dd1 slept in a low bed until we moved her into a proper bed just before she was 3. She was fine without a guard and I just put a duvet and pillows on the floor incase- she fel out twice max.

Dd2 went straight from cot to big bed so she did have guard but I took this off a couple of months ago- she is 3.8

Does your dd fall out of the bed she's in now?

If not, I wouldn't bother with the bed guard.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 11/08/2007 17:20

When DS uses a big bed on holiday I tend to tuck him in with a sheet and then put the duvet on top (if required). It stops him falling out and means he does not need a bed guard.
DS is 6, but he sleeps in a high sleeper cabin style bed, and they obviously have a rail round them. It's as if he has never 'learnt' how to not fall out of bed! When he's older and a too big for a cabin bed, he will probably still be falling out of bed

Never had one.

Very occasionally there has been a THUMP. Often the thumper hasn't even woken up.

Tinkjon · 11/08/2007 17:37

LOL, Attila!!! Pania, DD doesn't fall out of the bed now, but it's got slightly raised sides so that almost does the same job as a bed guard.

Doodle, wow, that is so kind of you! Does it fit a slatted bed base, do you know?

All three DC each went into a normal bed with no guard at about two. No probs

IdrisTheDragon · 11/08/2007 19:02

DS moved into an ordinary single (which looked so much higher than his toddler bed) about a month ago, when he was 3.8. Hasn't yet fallen out. And bedguard is currently being used by DD (22 months) in toddler bed (she did fall out so it is needed there).

I'd say she will be all right.

oneplusone · 11/08/2007 19:47

My DD is now 4 but we have never used a bed guard and she has been in a big bed since she was around 2. I think she fell out once ages and ages ago and never has since!

Rhubarb · 11/08/2007 19:48

lol at the title!

I never used bed guards either at first i'd just keep the old cot mattress under the bed and pull it out at night time in case she fell, she never did. The other side of the bed was against the wall. I think this way they soon learn the space they have and become aware of how far they can turn.

beautifulgirls · 11/08/2007 21:43

We have a couple of beanbag chairs next to DD#1's bed just in case and no bed rail. Hasn't had one since she moved out of a cot except the first 4 weeks. Had to take it off for some reason or other then and never put it back. She does just fine though.
