Sleep movement/breathing monitor

Hi,
I have a 4 week old baby and I get worried about her pauses in breathing at night, to the point where I find it hard to sleep myself. I've been looking at the angel care movement monitor and snuz hero breathing monitor, but wasn't sure which to get.

Has anyone used these? What are the positives/negatives?

Thanks!

When you say she pauses is this for an unusual amount of time or something you need to get checked out?
My friend used the angel care. She found it good. Only con would be that it went off accidentally a few times which nearly gave her a heart attack, and baby was happily sleeping away!

I had angel care. It was brilliant. Highly recommended.

But if your baby is pausing breathing at night please get her checked out by a doctor.

With my first it was reflux backing up into her airway causing apnoeic periods. Tilted bed & reflux meds fixed it.

Dont get one. They go off all the time and wake you and the baby up anyway and then you wake up in a panic for no reason and still dont sleep. Most parents dont sleep because of this it's normal.

I used the angel care one with my first and will do the same with my baby when she's big enough. Found it very reassuring. Yes the alarm does go off occasionally (less do the bigger she got) but if you know this and remind yourself that it's most likely because baby has rolled off the sensors then I found I didn't panic.

@BaaBaaBS @Mylittlepony374
I'm hoping the pause is just part of the normal sleep cycle, apparently pauses up to 10 seconds are normal? They don't last very long and when she napped today, I noticed sometimes she just breathes very quietly and the chest movements are well hidden under certain clothes. I have a consultant appointment this week (for other reasons) but will definitely be mentioning it then to see what he suggests!

I'm sure I saw one that's basically a sock that moniters them.

Napqueen1234 · 23/09/2019 18:05

There’s no evidence that any of those monitors actually reduce SIDS but do seem to cause a lot of parental anxiety. Id instead make sure I follow all the safe sleep guidelines and try to remember the risk of SIDS is v v low especially after 4 months. Maybe take baby to GP and discuss the long pauses (never heard a baby do that before) before though!

I had a Snuza Hero and had one false alarm in the 10 months that I used it. Well I assume it was a false alarm as she was fine when I catapulted ran to her room to check. She had also gone up a size in nappy that night so I think it was to do with the positioning of it. I stopped using it at 10 months because it kept falling off due to her rolling around. I had really bad anixety after her birth (born blue and not breathing) so it really saved my sanity I don't know how I'd have coped without it.

Celebelly · 23/09/2019 18:08

We have an Owlet sock. It's fantastic, zero false alarms in seven months, but it's not cheap.

Whatsthesmell · 23/09/2019 20:24

I used the Angel care for both my babies until they were around 11mths old and slept along the headboard of the cot and get it off a few times.
I swear the montior saved my oldest when he was around 7months. It went off and his chest wasn't moving and he wouldn't respond. Was very scary and thankfully all is OK. But I often feel haunted by the what if I didnt use it and woke hours later to my worst nightmare

MrsMaow · 23/09/2019 20:45

I used the snuza hero md til she was about 7 months and had one false alarm ever.
I then swapped to the angelcare as she took to rolling over loads in her sleep and the thing false alarms most nights, sometimes 4 or 5 times, as the little pickle like to sleep right in the corner and/or on her knees with her bum in the air. I think I still get more sleep even with the false alarms than I would worrying about her without it.

MrsMaow · 23/09/2019 20:46

To add... I know they don’t prevent SIDS but sadly there are other reasons babies pass away in their sleep and if any of those occur then I want the best chance to be able to do something about it.

December2019 · 23/09/2019 20:54

I've got the angel care one and my LO is 9 months and he's a corner sleeper too lol but you can increase the sensitivity to detect the smallest of movements

wobblywibble · 23/09/2019 22:27

@Whatsthesmell the same thing happened to us when DS was 9 months! The angel care went off and he was on his front, rolled him over and he didn't wake up. He woke up after what felt like an age and he's fine now but just like you I think 'what if' about that night.

KHR1 · 23/09/2019 23:00

@Whatsthesmell sounds like it was lucky you had one, glad everything turned out okay!

@MrsMaow like you said, I know it doesn't prevent SIDs and I follow safe sleeping guidelines but sometimes other things can happen! I'd definitely rather wake up to false alarms than sleep through my little one having a problem in the night.

I've heard about the owlet sock but unfortunately I don't think I have the money for it at the moment so thought the snuz/angel care would be a more affordable alternative.

We had a Nanny breathing monitor before the Owlet which worked really well. One thing to note is that if you have a co-sleeper crib attached to the bed, the pad monitors will pick up your breathing and movements as they are super super sensitive.

KHR1 · 24/09/2019 14:29

@Celebelly thank you for the comment about the cosleeper crib! I wish they made that clearer in the information they give before people buy!

Its an interesting topic. For those who say there isn't any evidence in reduction of SID , i must say that pre Babies in many countries in EU only allowed to leave hospitals if you have one! So it says a lot i think , and must be evidence/ prevention based routine. On the other hand, i have worked and talked to many mums who's baby was actually saved because they heard the alarm. I am not saying youmust have one, but certainly good to have one ;)
