Is it a crazy idea to take overnight ferry with a 4 months old?

DH wants to take the overnight ferry to St Malo for the half term break.

I'm wondering if it's way too much with a 4 months old baby. DS1 is 7, so he'd be alright. Baby is breastfed, still wakes up at night.

We've never taken ferry across the channel before. So have No idea how it's like. Obviously we'd bring our car with us. And Briexit doesn't happen until we return.

Is this idea too crazy???Hmm

It'll be fine! I quite regularly take DS on an overnight ferry (and nothing as gentle as the St Malo one!). It'll be like any first night in a strange place - a little light on the actual sleep - but you'll manage.

Remember you'll be limited in what you can take to the decks from the car so pack a separate bag for the boat journey with everything you'll need.

@Divgirl2, thank you! That sounds encouraging! Wine

I take that route every summer and have done since my DC were babies, although I think 9 months was the youngest I took them. I actually found mine slept better than normal on the ferry - the vibrations of the engine and the slight rocking motion. It's a nice long crossing too so you can get a decent amount of sleep if your LO allows. They have travel costs that fit between the bunks. Request it when you book to make sure you get one. And I agree, make sure you have everything you need from the car.

Having recently done an overnight ferry with three small ish kids I'd say it would be absolutely fine. If it's possible to get a cabin then it's just like a Travelodge room with a feint distant Diesel engine humm!

Pack an overnight bag for taking up from the car decks as you can't access the car once you sail.

We did this a lot when mine were young, I found it easier when they were small enough to have in bed (tiny bunk) with me feeding x

It's not crazy at all! We did the overnight ferry when DD was 3months.
We just booked a cabin and she shared a bed with me (we don't usually co-sleep).
We brought an overnight bag in from the car and it was really straightforward.

We did it when our son was a baby and breastfed. I slept in the little bunk with him and he fed throughout the night, the same as he would at home.

The downside is that you'll probably get little or no sleep. I just couldn't 'switch off' , but I never do on overnight sailings anyway

You'll have a great time Smile
