Have just washed 2 days of nappies that have been soaking in bucket with napisan and a few drops of tea tree oil. There were some soiled shorts from my son as he has decided he would prefer to poo in his pants this week

So as it was a heavily soiled load I decided to wash at 70 degrees and use napisan in the wash on the extended 'stain blaster' cycle. I thought that would do the trick (I used persil tabs as well not ecover).

Anyway the load still stinks of poo - yuk. I have put them on the line in the hope an airing will improve matters - but is there anything else I could/ should have done?

Do you normally use the tea tree? I put tea tree oil in the water once and found the nappies stank.

Can't think what got rid of the smell, but I never did it again!

I usually do put a few drops in to stop the bucket smelling but use a cloth - put the oil straight in to the soaking water this time was that my error???

do I need to do a bio wash then a non bio just to get them back to usable state?

blimey- i think it may just be detergent overkill- napisan + persil + soaking = detergent build up- try bunging them back through a wash with no detergent and maybe just a few drops of tea tree oil in the fab cond drawer- might help, then a good air on the line.

Have you cleaned out the washing machine filter recently and the rubber seal round the door- that where stink often lurks!

Good luck!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/08/2007 11:02

Thanks ceola - preggers again - p'haps I should try that - less is more! I will check the filter as well.

It really was a very pooey load

did you rinse the load before washing? that usually rinses a lot of it out so no extra detergent is needed and you aren't washing in poo iysim!

nappyneeds · 11/08/2007 12:21

If there was a lot of soiling on the shorts then this will account for the pooey smell. I would bung them back in wash with white vinegar and some extra rinses or that stain buster wash you metnioned.

I dont know what nappies you have but most manufacturers tend to recommend dry pailing.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/08/2007 12:23

I didn't rinse I loaded the machine last night in a hurry and just strained the net bag out and transfered the lot. I am a bit lazy about the process sometimes I think

really nappyneeds? I thought drypailing meant I would have to wash at higher temp and would mean stained nappies? I have a mix of pocket and wrap nappies (ellas house, fuzzi bunz). I did used to dry pail but I wanted to reduce the amount of washes/ temp etc. and thought that soaking was required.

I would like to return to dry pailing - the soaking is gross tbh but I am v confused now... oh well

I will get my white wine vinegar out

I started drypailing after advice on MN. I found the nappies don't smell after washing, which they did when I soaked. If they are ultra pooey I do a rinse first. Alsways do an extra rinse at the end. I generally wash them at 60.

I bung some tea tree oil and lavender into the bucket too - although it is diluted.

Must say that being able to dry them on the line over the last couple of weeks has also helped.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/08/2007 12:38

That decides me then - I will stop wet pailing today - can't say I will be sorry

Thank you very much all

wet pailing damages pocket nappy iirc, deteriorates the waterproof layer- espec napisan- that stuff's evil!

i dry pail and wash at 40 wqith an extra rinse before the main wash- no stains, no smells.

claireybee · 11/08/2007 13:13

I also dry pail, cold rinse before main wash, wash at 40 (use stainblaster button if very soiled) with teeny bit of detergent. I occasionally need to do an extra rinse at the end but very rarely. I only wash nappies twice a week

Ceolas · 11/08/2007 13:19

I spoke to a lady from One Life about germs/sanitising and she said their sanitiser (and probably Napisan) added to the wash kills all the germs even at 40 degrees. So no need for long hot washes.

I rinsed really poo-ey nappies immediately on changing and then dry pailed.
