Take ready made cartons and sterilised bottles to put the formula in when required

Or if it’s a prescription/one that doesn’t come ready made, thermos flask of water (I boil it and leave it for 20 minutes first) and little pots of powder (you can buy different branded ones that either clip together or fit inside the bottle) when it comes to mixing it I pour the water add powder and shake then wait till it’s cool (I have a cool bag with little ice packs to help that too)

Baby Bottle Cool Bag

I had a version of this, which kept made up bottles of formula properly cold for eight hours. It was made by Fridge to Go, and I still use it for packed lunches 10 years later. I can’t find it online anymore, maybe it’s not made. The bag linked above says it keeps cold for 4 hours, which is still a good useful amount of time. If you have a google, there are cooler bags for insulin and breastmilk which work for various lengths of time.

Ideally ready made bottles of formula would be your best bet as you can’t keep the water hot enough to add the powder too. Or I guess you could make the bottles up and then transport them cold and get them heated that way?

HappyParent2000 · 22/09/2019 08:06

We used ready made cartons, get the ones with screw top or you need something clean to open them.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/09/2019 08:09

Made the bottles first thing in the morning with hot water, blast chilled and then into cool bag and into the backpack. Fed at that (or room) temperature.

Thermos flask for water. Put needed amount of powder in separate containers. Mix up when needed.

Thank you all. With regards to makmg up feeds in the morning and then placing in fridge, am I right that we only have 4 hours kept in a cool bag before discarding? X

Yes its 4 hours in a cool bag with ice pack. That's why cartons are easier

dementedpixie · 22/09/2019 10:02

From nhs:

If made-up formula is stored:

  • in a fridge–use within 24 hours
  • in a cool bag with an ice pack–use withinfour hours
  • at room temperature–use withintwo hours

This way has worked extremely well for me and means your bottle is always immediately at drinking temperature - take out with you, a flask of boiled hot water, pots of correct amount of formula, sterile bottles and a bottle filled with cooled boiled water. For a 5 ounce bottle for example I would do -

Put 1 ounce of hot water into sterile bottle
Add the pre measured formula
Put lid on and shake
Then add correct amount and of cooled boiled water and shake again
Bottle should be drinking temp.

I’ve been doing this since daughter was 2 weeks old and have never needed to use a ready made carton. Hope it helps

Hel1985 · 23/09/2019 20:27

That is a really clever way, never thought of that 👌 how would you know how many ounces of top up water to put in as mine is always so bubbly once I mix it and probably takes it up an extra oz xxx

dementedpixie · 23/09/2019 20:32

You would have to pre measure the top up water so the formula isn't too concentrated

AM1994 · 23/09/2019 21:07

Yep exactly, also pre measure the top up water. It’s basically doing what the perfect prep machine does manually :)

Hel1985 · 24/09/2019 09:09

Fab, thank you. So would you use another bottle to measure the yop up water or can you get flasks that show oz's? Xx

I use another bottle to see the ounces for the top up water and use the screw on timer tippee lids, bought done more on amazon, was about a fiver for 4, cab then use those to shake when mixing. All sounds complicated at first but very easy when you are used to it l! Xx

I bring a flask of boiling water, I have the MAM formula dispenser and I just add boiling water to flask, then add formula and shake. I always make it up about half an hour before needed to make sure it's cooled down when needed
