hands in nappy

dd has started putting her hands in nappy when she's had a poo. she actually started putting them in a while ago at the front, and I was gently discouraging it but not making it a big deal. now that she's exploring after a poo, i think i need to take a firmer approach. i already do all the normal stuff - saying no, saying that it's dirty, asking her if she's done a poo, asking her to tell mummy if she's had a poo, etc, etc.

any tips?!

She's probably playing with it because she's interested in it, and making a fuss about it might make her think it's more interesting than it is. I don't know how old she is but if she can understand, just tell her that poo has lots of germs in it - don't say it's dirty, or she'll think that she is dirty too - and don't make too much fuss. Wash her hands then find something interesting to do and hopefully she'll grow out of it. That was my HV advice to me, although dd didn't do it for long enough for it to be a problem.

sorry, should have said she's 23 months. i don't think she'll understand the germs thing, but i'm happy to give it a go! thanks for the advice

My ds (15mo) does this (his hand are more directed at his willy(!) but he gets his hands covered if it's a big poo) and it's taken 2 months of saying 'no, mummy hasn't cleaned you yet' and no more fuss than that before he's finally waiting till I've cleaned him before trying to touch himself!

Agree with TraceyP about not making much fuss. Also try giving her something to hold before you take the nappy off, have the wipes readys and try and do it as quickly as possible before she drops the item!
