The angelcare bath seat! Much much better than a baby bath, and I'm so sorry I didn't have one for my 1st baby as it made bath times a dream :)

Also my DD screamed bloody murder when put in a baby bounce chair, but loved the fisherprice giraffe chair once she could support her head. Still uses it now at 9 months old, I put her in it when I'm cooking and she'll sit there happily x

Perfect prep if you’re formula feeding at all
Dummies as backup even if you plan not to use them
Lots of muslins

Oh and calpol!! Buy it before you need it

Oooh just seen you asked for top 5! Ok so another 3 . . .

  • Grosnug when the baby is born, then switch to grobag. Less faff with blankets and worrying about them suffocating or kicking them off and getting too cold
  • Groegg thermometer to go alongside the grobags so you can check the room temp and use the correct tog bag and either a sleepsuit or vest (the website tells you what to put them in at each temp)
  • Hellobaby video baby monitor. Crystal clear image, even in the dark, and when you're ready to put them up in the room and leave them until you come up, it's a great comfort to be able to see them

for parents
Decent coffee.
Squash if breast feeding.
Freezer full of ready meals or batch cooked stuff.
Comfy chair to feed in.
Music/audiobooks for night feeds.

just in case
Dummy's
Readymade formula
Bottles
Calpol.
Sudocream
Nipple cream

For babies
Car seat
Somewhere to sleep
Nappies
Wipes
Layers of clothes for varied temperatures.
Bath that fits in your bath or shower.

Honestly most other things are barely used & you don't need a high chair until they can sit up.

  1. Baby Bjorn bouncer seat. It was the 3rd parent for the first 8 weeks.
  2. Angelcare bath support.
  3. Oxo Perfect Pull wipe dispenser.
  4. Nappy Caddy (Amazon, around £10)
  5. The John Lewis muslin squares.
HayleyHaystack · 20/09/2019 17:29

For new mum:

  1. Black spaghetti strap nighties (if breastfeeding) - handy during the night.
  2. LVL lash treatment pre birth. You look wide awake for the first month with a newborn.
  3. A well stocked biscuit tin!
  4. Comfy / flattering loungewear set (that is machine washable) that you can throw on if it’s been a bad morning or you’ve got visitors during those first 2 weeks.
  5. Decent pair of trainers. You’ll be walking A LOT.

Shoes that can be put on one handed while carrying a baby
Gripe water/infacol/calpol (gripe water can be used at 4 weeks, calpol 2 months but I was glad I had it in the house at midnight when I needed it!)
Amazon prime subscription - every baby is different so you can't buy it all, I did a lot of panic ordering
Netflix subscription
Can't think of a fifth that won't be covered by the usual 'what to buy your baby' lists

rainypuddles · 20/09/2019 22:55

A decent travel mug so you get to drink hot coffee.

Chugchugtraintrain · 20/09/2019 23:00

A comfortable sling or carrier

The best (safest, longest lasting) car seat you can afford.

Access to good support. - family and friends or supportive local groups

Buiscuits

If beastfeeding, a decent feeding bra.

GoldenNoodle · 20/09/2019 23:04

It's a long time since I did it, but:

Lansinoh cream -best thing for cracked nipples and works pretty well on hands.
BabyBjorn bouncer
Loads of baby grows - the ones that fit over the feet so you don't have to bother with tiny socks that fall off. Forget cute little outfits unless it's a special occasion - baby grows are all you need!
Metanium nappy rash cream.
A really good, roomy bag for packing all the kit in when you go out.

popehilarious · 20/09/2019 23:10

If breastfeeding, a sleep bra - i liked the cotton crossover ones. You may well need breast pads which will need to be held in place by a bra.

Big bottle (for you!) and a dressing gown/hoodie with big pockets to carry your bottle, remote, phone etc around.

Ear thermometer is useful as you will need to check their temperature at some point.

Obviously a suitable pushchair but a sling is also good when they're little.

When they start toddling I found I needed a backpack style nappy bag instead of a shoulder one.

Freezer full of meals!

Bedding for the baby's cot/crib - for some reason it didn't really occur to me. The Hippychick waterproof mattress protectors are great. as are the Next To Me cribs.
