Changing from sleeping bag to duvet

When did you change from using sleeping bags to using a duvet with your DC?

My DS is 16 months and still using sleeping bags but is nearly outgrowing the 18 month ones so I don’t know if I’m better changing to a duvet or just getting the next size up! Interested to see what age you changed over.

My dd is 20 months and moves around so much we're still using sleeping bags. Not sure how big they go up to but hopefully a bit longer.

I’d advise making the switch at the start of the summer, not as the nights get colder. When my dd’s room got chilly I started putting a light blanket over her sleeping bag to get her used to keeping it on - she must have been approaching 2. We started the transition when she was 2.5 and we were going into spring so not such a biggie if she wriggled it off. I also sewed a piece of ribbon onto one side of her duvet so I could tie it onto the side of the cotbed to make sure it didn’t completely come off, even if she kicked.

If your dc isn’t bothered about a sleeping bag, I’d stick with it for this coming autumn/winter. If it’s becoming a bit restrictive you could always try a sleep snuggled from JoJo, we used them a lot.

Dd is 2 in November and I am sort of the same as you, not sure when to move up to a quilt, however she is still such a fidget I just am nervous it’ll end up over her head!

So I just purchased from H&M an age 2-4 one for when she outgrows the current 1-2 yr old ones she has, although she currently has plenty of room still. Well the 2-4 one arrived and is bloody massive 🙈🤣 I can actually hold it up against my body and it completely covers it (I’m about 5ft 4!)

You can definitely get big enough ones if you’re not ready to move on yet. I’m going to stick with it until we move her in to a toddler bed, we don’t intend to do that until she’s at least 2 and a half to 3.

We got to this point when they just didn’t fit anymore & we opted for changing to a duvet, DS was about 13/14 months (he’s mega long)
I started off putting the duvet on sideways so there was lots more to tuck in, and he would have full pjs and warm socks on for bed. We played lots of games covering ourselves up so he learned how to get under a cover/duvet.

Few weeks of checking before we went to sleep that he was covered but not for long, now he’s happy to snuggle himself back down if he manages to get uncovered.
It does help that he adores being toasty. He’s currently insisting on napping in a full dressing gown 😂 under his quilt. So that’ll be nice and sweaty when he wakes up

I decided to get the next size up which goes up to three. My boy changes positions so many times and seems happy enough in his bags.

hazandduck I might get one for me then, looks much better than scrapping with my OH for the duvet all night!

I've just brought winter weight ones that go up to 3yo as I don't want to have to be up all night in the cold putting a duvet back on a wriggle monster.

Not till 2 and a half when he moved to a bed from a cot.

meepmoop · 16/09/2019 07:37

We found DS was finding them restricted so swapped around 18 months to.

To start with though I bought a duvet and just left it at the bottom of his cot so he got used to it being there and then eventually he got the idea of it and now asks to be tucked in

HappyPunky · 16/09/2019 07:39

DD used sleeping bags until about 2 and a half which was during the summer and she slept under an empty duvet cover to get used to the change while it was warm enough to kick it off without waking her up.

Thank you all for the advice!

My DS is a wriggler so think we will stick to sleeping bags at least until next summer if he’ll let us :)

Wriggler at 2.2 so whilst he has one a duvet it's not used.

He's also a hotbod so is fine in just PJs and no covers quite often
