Getting antibiotics into a 3yo

Looking for a miracle....have amoxicillin for my 3yo DD and have had zero luck getting her to take a dose.
Thought having 'yummy banana flavour' would make it easier but no.
Have tried everything I can find on Google including:
Hiding in cereal, milkshakes, Nutella
Trying to reason with her/explaining consequences
Giving her options on syringe, spoon, little cup
Husband holding her on his knee and trying to syringe into her mouth (this makes me cry and seems like torture) pools it and spits it all out
Adding food colouring, flavouring and transfering to a Calpol bottle (which she normally likes)
She is so stubborn and we have probably wasted so much now she won't get a decent course to rid her of her chest infection. 😭😭

This used to happen to me, unfortunately I had to do it the horrible way of holding her down and just slowly squeezing the syringe out in the back corner of her mouth, then gently closing her mouth. Ends up making her swallow. I think it sounds worse than it actually is. Good luck!

Sheer bribery - chocolate after ever dose works for my girl

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/09/2019 19:27

could you get a cup like this (even if its just for next time)? it hides the medicine, and so when the child drinks out of it they get all the medicine and drink mixed together (chocolate milk works well). use it even when she isnt taking medicine so she doesn't associate taking medicine with the cup

Chocolate/sweets given after each dose worked for us when the kids were little.

Chocolate petit filous. Strong flavour masks most things. Small amount of yoghurt so she gets full dose. Gently open lid, mix in medicine, put lid back down so she is unaware. Must be well mixed in to work. We did this for DS who was on antibiotics a lot from 8 months to 6 years until he grew out of ear infections. Good luck!

Tell them they can't have it, it's not for them - sounds mad but works with my toddler. As soon as I say he can't have it he wants it!!

Is there a sibling?
Fill a syringe up with juice and offer it to the sibling. If the sibling is older get them to do a song and dance about how nice it is.

My son tackled me and shouted about how he wanted it after days of a massive battle.

My dd got chocolate after every dose. I sympathised that it was horrid, wafted chocolate under her nose and told her she could have it the moment she’d had her medicine. The stuff was foul but it worked a charm anyway.

FFS. You hold them down, put the syringe at the back of their mouth and slowly push the contents in. It might seem hideous, but ending up in intensive care with a tube down their throat and on a ventilator because their chest infection has become severe pneumonia will be a whole heap more hideous. Maybe I’ve had a glass too many this evening, but I work in a hospital and see this all the time. You are the parent. Sometimes they don’t get a choice.

Last time we had this problem I used vast quantities of Betty Crocker chocolate frosting. Very unhealthy but it worked! It took quite a lot of frosting to disguise the taste though...
