Wwyd - nursery wanting non walking child to have shoes

DS is 18 mos. He was deprived of oxygen at birth and whether for this reason or because he is a slow developer, he doesn't really walk yet. (He is under paeds care.)

He can pull himself up and stagger a few steps but crawls mostly.

As he is 18mos his nursery have moved him to the toddler room. This room has an area of outdoor decking and they are now saying he must have shoes.

We've always been told it is important to allow babies to learn to walk without shoes and only put shoes on when they are confident - but nursery say this isn't true. They are quite insistent.

Wwyd?

I don't rate Clarks shoes at all, or their fitting skills, especially for a pre-walker. You're far better off measuring your child's feet yourself and buying a soft barefoot-style shoe instead.

OP - Bobux Xplorer shoes are your friend here. Their uppers are amazingly soft and flexible, like leather slippers, and they have different fabric over the toes to resist abrasion during crawling. But the soles are the best bit - so thin and flexible you can roll up the shoe but enough to protect feet outside. If nursery won't accept moccasins, these are as minimal as it gets.

They are a similar price to Clarks roamers but far more flexible and worth it if they're in your price range. There are some on sale www.happylittlesoles.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=+Bobux+xplorer

No reason to hold back a non walker...he should be with peers and his twin.

.They should adapt. It s nursery

Can he not have a little pair of soft shoes they put on him when he’s going out on the deck and be barefoot the rest of the time?

This is what we do with DD 20 months. She only has them on when outside and only at nursery. With us she cruises barefoot or in socks so it's not a really small proportion of time.

Going to be a pain as it gets colder though.

My DD was a very late walker (20m) & was prem too.

I bought her shoes for nursery as they were outside a lot & her feet would get cold/wet otherwise.

She walked when she was ready.

Hi everyone, thanks for thoughts! So I spoke to a.different worker at the nursery today and they are fine with the moccasins. Phew!

I think we will reasses in Oct after payday and get some soft shoed then, poss from the links mentioned.

Thanks again!

My little one is 2 and not walking, nursery asked us for shoes to wear when outside. We see physio regularly who have said it’s fine and may even help. As PP have suggested, we bought pre-walker shoes from Clarks
