Leaky nappies and cleaning wee out of mattress

DS's nappies have started leaking at night. He's 26 months old and wears the Pampers Size 5 Activfit nappies. They don't seem to do any larger ones. I thought perhaps a Pull-Up would be more absorbent since they're for 'big kids' but last night his Pull-Up leaked. Can anyone recommend a nappy that won't leak?

The other issue now is how best to clean wee out of a mattress. I'm especially worried about odour. He has a water proof pad on his bed but he often ends up in our bed in the morning and this morning his nappy leaked on our mattress. What's the best way to clean it up?

Thanks.

they do normal pampers in large and extra large (size 6/7) for older/larger children. active fit only go up to size 5.

when the matress is cleaned and dry, then sprinkle some bicard of soda on it, leave for an hour or so, then vacumn off.

We had a similar problem - tried bigger nappies but it didn't always work as he seemed to do a massive wee first thing which overwhelmed the nappy. 2 things we did to minimise the problems were: cut down his bedtime drink of milk a bit and change nappy as soon as possible in the morning.

Another vote for Pampers Easy Up Pants at night, dd is nearly 3 and a half and they never leak.

Ds nappys also leak at night. He often wakes in a morning with his nappy at bursting point. He wears pant's in the day and has done for about 9 months now. Totally potty trained except poos but that's another thread. The trouble is he drinks an awful lot at night. He has a large anyway up cup that get's filloed up to 8 times a night. Tried pull ups and gound they are worse than nappies. Have now discoverd care mats do bedmats so just put one of those under his cover and have to change his bedding every day. I don't know what else to try. Sometimes I double his nappy up but that doesn't seem to work. Last night was slightly better sat him on the loo when I went to bed and changed his nappy when I woke in the night but I don't always wake in the night!!!!

woodpops, stop the drinks at night. means uget more sleep too, and cut your laundry down.

Febreze has been recommended before for any odour problem

I started a thread on leaking overnight nappies a couple of weeks ago and everyone recommended Pampers pullups as the most reliable brand. I've used these now at night for over a week and no leaks so far (had leaks 6/10 previous nights). Is this the brand that you're using?

Re. cleaning the mattress, I had to do this too and used Vanish carpet and upholstory foam, which doesn't make mattress too wet and includes some odour remover. This was fine for wee. In the past though dd has been sick over mattress and that absolutely stinks no matter how many times you clean it. I found rug doctor odour remover really good for that (after shampooing with the Vanish).

Tried cutting the drinks at night, doesn't work. I drink 6 pints of squash myself at night!!!!

I wouldn't personally trust disposables at night with a toddler - especially a heavy wetter - they're just not up to the job IMO.

Ds (2) is in reusables. We use Totsbots (shaped terry nappies with 5 layers of cotton) with an added terry booster (another 3 layers) in a waterproof breathable cover (wrap) and we've never had a leak at night. They're wringing wet in the morning, but wee never make it past the wrap.

I use them full time, but if you only needed then part time, then 3/4 nappies and one wrap would be plenty - about £25. Pull ups work out at about 25p a nappy I think so depending on how much longer you think you might need them, it could save you money too.

woodpops, have you been drinking that much for a long time?

tex111 · 22/09/2004 16:24

He was in the Pampers Easy Up pants last night and it was the first time that they leaked. He just has a 9oz cup of milk before bed and doesn't drink in the night so I would think that the nappies should be able to handle it. I'll definitely get some of those bed mats and look for a larger size regular nappy. We've always used the Activfit ones because they're so stretchy but we could just use the regular ones at night and see if that helps.

I didn't think about using the Vanish on the mattress but I'll try it and stock up on some Rug Doctor for the future! I hit it with the Febreze this morning and that's helped.

Put him in a 5+ Baby Dry Pampers last night and it didn't leak. I think what he's doing is holding his wee from dinner and then he really fills his nappy when he falls asleep. I'm going to try and see if I can get him to empty his bladder in his potty before bed and that should help to stop the leaking too.

For cleaning wee, the best thing is to get some spray enzyme cleaning stuff from the vets that is designed to break down wee and sick from pets on upholstery. But leave plenty of time for it to dry before putting your kid to bed.
