Teething at 14 weeks

I think my baby is teething but I'm not sure. He never usually cries but today hes cried a lot, with real tears. Which I hate to see. Cuddles aren't soothing him either. I have to walk him around the house and show him things to distract him. Hes chewing his fingers a lot. And trying to chew anything else he can grab. Hes struggling to get to sleep and when he does he wakes quickly. Hes drooling. But hes been doing the hand chewing and drooling for a while now. His cheeks look redder than normal. But not bright red. I put a teething toy to his mouth and he really chomped on that. I've checked for any other reasons for the tears and cant find one. I just wanna be certain that he is teething so I can do my best to help him. Any advice would be amazing.

My dd did the same thing but no teeth came through, she’s 9 months and only now got one and a half teeth. No one prepares you for how long teething takes. I think at that age it’s the roots that are hurting them x

My little boy got first tooth at 4 months exactly. Next three came in same week at 5 months exactly. Had all his baby teeth by the time he was 1. He was extremely dribbly but no other issues thankfully.

He did chew his hands and Sophie the giraffe a lot. My little girl would have gotten red cheeks and bad nappies round teeth coming through.

Teething is crap because some babies can have symptoms for ages and not get any teeth till quite late, and others can have very few symptoms and get teeth earlier. My DD is 7mo and the only reason I noticed she was teething a week or so ago was because I saw the tooth poking through her gum! But her wee pal has been horribly teethy since three months old and nothing to show for it yet :(

If he's really distressed, baby ibuprofen might help (find that's better for pain relief than paracetamol) but something cool to chew on might offer some relief and just allow him to chomp on teething toys. Sophie the giraffe is a big hit in this house!

I bought a little teething glove thing off amazon. It was great, as dd wasn’t dexterous enough to hold a real teething toy but she loved chomping on this glove

Anbesol gel - that was a GODSEND when my lil ones were teething

I hope they all come through quickly OP. One of mine teethed early and fast and it was over quickly. My youngest had a long, drawn out, horrible time. We used teetha granules for all of ours. They seemed to help a bit. Lots of teething / chew type toys which could be cleaned and kept in the freezer. And for the youngest we got the amber jewellery widely disparaged on MN. We were desperate, no idea if it helped but baby didn't choke and I've still got the amber which I intend to re-string with some other beads.

Good luck and hope the teeth come through soon but in the meantime take lots of photos of the lovely gummy smiles.

Thanks everyone. Gonna get a teething dummy tomorrow. For now I've put water on a dummy and put it in the freezer. Might work. Might not. But If he wakes me up at 3am I'll be willing to try anything lol. So u all think hes defo teething then? Any one got any advice on how to settle teethy babies off to sleep? Cuddles aren't working like they normally do. He just throws him self around. I thought maybe swaddle, but I've never done that. Also I read that anbesol gel can only be used for 5 months onwards. I have some in the cupboard, and thought I'd won the teethy lottery when I found it, until I asked Google lol.

Also I read something about rubbing the gums gently with a baby tooth brush. Anyone had any joy with this?

Teething glove worked great for me when DS started teething at about 12 weeks but wasn’t yet able to hold a chew toy. Sophie the Giraffe is fab once they’re old enough to hold it.

DS loves his Sophie, we've also got a matchstick monkey, they can go in the freezer and have like a rubber toothbrush bit on the back of the head that you can put bonjela/Ashton and parson's on, we've also got a gel filled one that goes in the fridge, they're on rotation so there's a clean one always available. The thing he loves most though is home made ice lollies, I got the AK moulds and make them with pear or Apple purée (less staining), he gnaws away at them and now he has a few teeth happily scrapes into the ice, it's also good when his teeth are putting him off eating. As your DC is a bit younger and might not be weaning yet you could use breast milk or formula.
