Making a formula feed out and about advice!

milly2000 · 31/08/2019 07:29

I have a 3 week old son and current when out I take a flask of boiled water with me. Add powder to the sterilised bottle add the required amount of boiled water and place it in cold water to cool down.
My only problem with this is when my boy wants feeding he wants it now and not in 10 mins when it's cooled down.

Does anyone use this method...
Add formula
Add part boiling water
Then add part cooled boiled water to make it the correct temp

I'd rather carry two flasks with me for instant feeding and less crying!

Also what's the best way to cool boiled water? And how long does it stay safe?

Sorry long post for something very simple I'm sure. New mum making things complicated lol

My son is 9 months & from a few weeks old we started doing boiling water & then add cool boiled water to make correct temperature for instant feeding. We did have a prep machine, but he didn't get on with it, so this is the method we used & still do, even if we are at home.
I was told that formula needed to be added to boiling water to kill bacteria, so we would add boiling water, add formula & then from a separate bottle/flask add the cool boiled water.
For example now I make a 7oz bottle with 2.5 boiling water & 4.5 cool boiled water as that is the temp my son likes his milk. Not had any problems & found this is the quickest & easiest way. I would usually add the correct oz of water to a separate small bottle for it to cool down for his next bottle & carry on that way throughout the day/nights.

I used to do the two flask method as my son seems to have inherited my hanger! At home, I'd always fill a sterilised bottle with boiled water in the morning, cool it and then refrigerate. Each time I made a made a new bottle, I'd replace it. It was never in the fridge for longer than 3 or 4 hours.
I'd always make a feed with 2oz boiled water and top up with cooled boiled water. I'd take the cooled water out in an extra bottle and the hot water in a thermos. It's a bit of a faff but it meant less screaming!

Cool the water by boiling the kettle and leaving it out until its room temp, then put a lid on. Doesn't need to be in the fridge but if you need it cooled a bit quicker sit it in an ice bath. It'll be fine for the day.

I pre-made all of the days bottles (with hot water) and chilled and refrigerated them.

When out and about I'd either take the chill off the bottle by standing it in hot water or remove it from the cool bag an hour before the feed (they fed pretty regularly). Getting mine used to room temp milk was a real benefit.

We just buy the travel sized ready made formula when we go out. It is put it into an already sterilised bottle that we bring out with us. I like it because it saves DD waiting. Hope this helps!

Bubblysqueak · 31/08/2019 08:12

We did the same as you. To cool it down , if in a cafe or restaurant/pub would either ask for a jug of cold water or ice bucket.
When we knew we would be out and about with no where like a cafe we would either take a bottle of chilled water to cool it.

StateOfMind · 31/08/2019 08:14

Just buy the ready made cartons. Much easier when out and about.

hsegfiugseskufh · 31/08/2019 08:16

I did it once and then decided it was too much like hard work and started buying tge little ready made bottles for days out.

jamoncrumpet · 31/08/2019 08:21

Ready made every time. Sod the price, it's worth not having to faff.

Pinkiii · 31/08/2019 08:31

We used this method too, just let the water cool from the kettle and keep it in the fridge in a bottle with a lid. Much easier to carry 2 flasks then wait for it to cool in cold water.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 31/08/2019 08:31

We did this method when DD1 moved onto specialist formula. You need to used premeasured cooled water though as when you add the formula it increases the volume so if you were making 5oz bottle you end up with more milk than 5oz. If you don’t premeasure the cooled water you run the risk of the child becoming dehydrated and constipated.

fruitpastille · 31/08/2019 08:34

Use ready made or make it up the proper way in advance then rapidly chill and take it out in a cool bag. Also good for night time. My first child liked the milk cold which made life easier!

neverornow · 31/08/2019 13:48

Cool boiled water all the way.
I filled a few bottles of water at a time, put lid on, left to cool on counter (never in fridge), then added formula.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 31/08/2019 15:40

There is no point boiling it if you are adding it to cold water. It’s the formula that potentially has bacteria in it not the water.

Bobbiepin · 31/08/2019 16:19

NHS advice is to only give babies cooled boiled water. You need the shot of hot to kill the bugs in the formula but it should be topped up with cooled boiled until 6 months. PP's suggestion of pre making all bottles and keeping them in the fridge is very outdated now.

dementedpixie · 31/08/2019 16:21

It is still valid way to make bottles even though the optimum method is to make fresh each time. I used ready made cartons when out

dementedpixie · 31/08/2019 16:24

From nhs site:

What if I need to transport a made-up feed?

If it isn't possible to follow the advice above, or if you need to transport a feed (for example, to a nursery),prepare the feed at home and cool it for at least one hour in the back of the fridge.

Take it out of the fridge just before you leave and carry it in a cool bag with an ice pack, and use it within four hours. If you don't have an ice pack, or access to a fridge, the made-up infant formula must be used within two hours.

If made-up formula is stored:

  • in a fridge–use within 24 hours
  • in a cool bag with an ice pack–use withinfour hours
  • at room temperature–use withintwo hours
fruitpastille · 31/08/2019 17:37

Thanks @dementedpixie The WHO guidelines also say the same.

Liland · 31/08/2019 18:08

We're on amnio acid formula, so no ready made for us, and because of reflux, LO has preferred his milk fridge cold since very young. We pre make a batch (10 scoops) and cool in ice in the fridge, and serve straight from there. We make a few batches a day. Never had any problems.

mummytobabygirl17 · 31/08/2019 19:30

I’m the same as others we used ready made bottles when we was out and about so much easier when a hungry baby needs feeding Smile
