When did your baby drop to 2 bottles?

Baby boy is 11.5 months.
I don’t know when to drop to two bottles.

He’s started nursery this past week for 3 days, one day they forgot to give him his afternoon bottle and he wasn’t bothered and the day after he only took 3 oz of formula. He’s at home with me today and he seems to be wanting the milk so I’ve made it in a sipping cup for the first time and he doesn’t seem to like having it from there. I only made 4oz (he usually has 8oz).

He has 9oz in the morning and 9oz at night.

Routine:
7am 9oz formula
8am He has cows milk from this week in his cereal, so he can get used to it for nursery.
10am nap
12pm Homemade lunch with cheese sprinkled on top with a Yeo Valley fromage frais pot
1pm Fruit
2:30pm He used to have formula so might try a snack instead?
3pm Nap
4pm Fruit
5-6pm Dinner followed by mini Ambrosia custard/rice pudding
8pm 9oz Formula

He has water throughout the day.

Nursery give their dinner at 3:30pm and Lunch at 11am so I’m wondering whether that’s why he’s not interested in the afternoon formula there.

Should I drop the afternoon one or keep giving it to him?

He’s a big tall boy. Weighs 35lbs!

Mine were on 2 from 10ish months. From 1 year they only need around 300mls

dementedpixie · 30/08/2019 16:32

Sorry nhs says 350mls not 300mls.

Try to give your child at least 350ml (12oz) of milk a day, or 2 servings of foods made from milk, such as cheese, yoghurt or fromage frais.

Semi-skimmed milk can be introduced from the age of 2, provided your child is a good eater and growing well for their age.

Skimmed or 1% fat milk doesn't contain enough fat, so isn't recommended for children under 5. You can use them in cooking from the age of 1, though.

You can give your child unsweetened calcium-fortified milk alternatives, such as soya, almond and oat drinks, from the age of 1 as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Toddlers and young children under the age of 5 shouldn't have rice drinks because of the levels of arsenic they contain.

My DS is nearly 8 months and already showing signs that he's ready to drop it. I'm only keeping it going until the weather cools down really, next month I will probably replace with a drink of water and a snack. If it's any help his routine is:

7.30/8am 7oz formula
8.30am breakfast - weetabix with cow's milk
9.30am 30 minute nap
12pm main cooked meal with natural yoghurt and fruit for pudding
12.30pm 2 hour nap
2.30pm 6oz formula (possibly dropping this next month)
5pm light dinner, no pudding
6pm bath
6.30pm 7oz bottle and bed

Probably about 11 months - we had a couple of days that we missed the third bottle because of being out and about and he didn't seem to notice. Moved straight onto cow's milk (in reduced quantity from formula) at 1. He's a big boy too and absolutely no problems - he has cheese, milk on cereal and yogurt during the day in addition to 2-3 cups of milk a day.

We dropped to two bottles around 12 months. 2 5oz bottles of dairy milk. She has her morning one in a sippy cup for about the last month now (she's 14 months).

sewinginscotland · 30/08/2019 21:20

Mine's starting to show signs of dropping it at 10.5m, he's refused his 3pm bottle the last couple of days. I give him 8oz in the morning and 7oz at bedtime. He also usually gets 4oz overnight as, alas, he doesn't sleep through yet.

Follow his lead. You should give 17oz a day, if he's having 2 9oz bottles then he's exceeding that so can drop the afternoon bottle if he wants it.

Thank you for your replies.

Judging from your routines,

Giving a fromage frais and a mini custard or rice pudding in one day, is that too much? And too much sugar? He eats all his veg and fruit in the day too. He’d eat all day if I let him!

I would give a fromage frais or plain Greek yoghurt with a bit of fruit. The custard and rice pudding seems a bit excessive for a baby under one - they don't really have any concept of treats or dessert at that age. You could give the 1pm and 4pm fruit after lunch and dinner instead.

Following as my lb is 8.5 months and still on 4 bottles a day and not sure when he should be dropping to 3.he has
7oz ish at 7am
breakfast of weetabix or scrambled egg at 9am
nap 9.30-10.30
3-5oz formula at 11/11.30 (i offer 6oz)
Food at 1pm ish, usually finger foods or a pouch
5-6oz at 4pm ish (offer 6oz)
Then a pouch or home cooked food eg mash, carrots & meat or blended spag bol with yoghurt for pud
Then bath, 7oz /8oz milk and sleeps through

His 2.middle bottles are small so maybe I should cut the 11am bot and give earlier meal instead? Or give 4oz In a sippy cup alongside food, or give just food then a larger bottle at 4

polkadotpixie · 30/08/2019 22:56

My son is 1 next week and he's just dropped to 2 bottles this week. He's a lot smaller than your son though, only 20lbs and has only just started properly eating

thunderthighsohwoe · 31/08/2019 09:10

9 month old (has never been a big fan of milk, tried various formulas including dairy free to no avail):

Up 6am and 4oz bottle (if we’re lucky she’ll have about 2oz).
7.30am porridge/Weetabix/toast & banana
9am half hour nap
10am fruit/yoghurt/melty puffs/biscotti
12pm lunch (usually mashed food or breadsticks, cheese etc followed by fruit or yoghurt)
1pm nap for an hour if we’re lucky
2pm fruit/yoghurt/melty puffs/biscotti
4.30pm dinner (similar to lunch but rusk for dessert)
6.30pm bedtime bottle of 6oz, normally takes about 3/4oz
One bottle overnight of 6oz which (typically) she drinks all of
Water in a sippy cup with all meals and available all day, she just grabs it when she wants it.

Hope that helps.

We dropped it about 10 months and replaced it with a snack although I know people who continued it long after 1.
