Mastitis for the 4th time! Help me

Seriously...baby boy nearly 3 months old. Breast fed, latches well, feeds well. Since getting rid of colic he’s very still on the boob.
But this is the 4th time mastitis has taken over, boobs don’t hurt but go red, hard and the fever is a nightmare, the last time I was bed bound for days with a temp of 41! I’ve had antibiotics for every time which has treated it. But I hate the idea of taking them time and time again.
I pumped for the first time this week with a hand pump (sterilised it before) used it correctly was very comfortable didn’t over do it. That’s the only change, but I don’t know why I keep getting it. I’ve had enough. The first time was a when he was first born and my boobs were engorged. Second time no idea why but was the worst time! Third time didn’t really manifest and this time I’m only an hour in so don’t know where this is going to go. Anyone got any ideas or pro tips? I really dont want to give up or go onto formula.

Might be worth asking the HV or a breastfeeding clinic to check for a tongue tie.
I breastfed my first for 8m with no issues, within the first week with my second I had mastitis and she was found to have a tongue tie, despite it feeling like I was getting a good latch.

Even if it not a tie issue they may be able to work out why by going through you routine and seeing if there is anything that is triggering it.

Hope it clears soon and you find a resolution that doesn't stop you feeding

OP this was me. Oh my god isn't it awful. I was so unbelievably fed up and upset with it all. It really does make you feel rotten!

Thinking back I don't think I got it anymore after he was maybe 5 months. Might have been before that. Basically after my supply had fully calmed down and his feeding became slightly more reliable.

However a really big thing that turned it around for me was sorting out his tongue tie. I knew he had one from birth but we had a long wait to get it sorted. As soon as it was sorted I stopped getting mastitis. Coincidence - maybe but I don't think he was draining them properly (explained all the awful hunger crying 24/7 too!!) Might he worth looking in to?

It really is rubbish. Look after yourself.

Do you have a breast feeding group you can go to for advice, or a breast feeding peer support programme. (check your NHS or childrens centre.) Check latch and tongue tie. Are you feeding often enough? Hope you get this sorted.

It was a very long time ago for me but I found that expressing milk always resulted in blocked ducts and then mastitis. I gave up expressing altogether because I was too afraid of another bout. I hope you find another solution but certainly it was that for me.

I agree with what others say but I'd also think through factors that might be giving you blocked ducts (which I think is what leads to mastitis)

So sling or bag straps, badly fitting bras, lying in an awkward position...

Also check out kellymom website if you haven't already, it's packed with good info x
