Toddler weighing - how often?

Hi

Just wondering how often you are all taking your LOs to be weighed?
My DD is 21 months now but as now back at work and nursery it’s hard to sometimes get to the clinic.
Her first year we always attended when requested, they were always pleased with her weight and she’s a good eater but the last 6 months or so we haven’t attended at much.

I’m probably just over thinking it.

Thanks

After around 7-8 months I didn't get mine weighed until their 2 year checks. Then d's was weighed when he started school and by the asthma nurse. Definitely not regularly weighed over a year old.

Once they turned one I didn't get them weighed until the 2 year check (which was actually 3/4 months after their birthday). I think unless you have concerns there's no need to take them at that age.

Where I live (London) the HV team have drop-in weighting sessions, but that is only until they are 1 year, I couldn't take her after that. Until they are 1 year it makes sense to keep monitoring the weight more closely, to see if they are feeding ok, or if they are eating enough when they start on solids, but if all seems fine after a year, there is no reason to be weighting a toddler very often. Sometimes we do it at home, but just out of curiosity (our scale at home always gives the same result as the HV's)

I took DS the day after his first birthday and that's it. I just pop him on the scales at home and check it against the red book for my own interest.

DappledThings · 29/08/2019 21:06

DC1 got taken about every 4 weeks. DC2 has never been taken to be weighed apart from her 1 year check. One more thing that seems so much less important second time round!

Harrysmummy246 · 29/08/2019 21:10

Honestly? Officially, last at 15 months. We've popped him on our scales once or twice since then (or he climbs on himself). Probably around 13 mo as well to check car seat weight limit

Pinkblueberry · 29/08/2019 21:14

Am I the only one who never went to see the HV to get my DC weighed? We have scales at home.

Pinkblueberry · 29/08/2019 21:17

Just saw your post Yoghurt, me too! I’ve never understood this weekly traipsing to the nearest health or children’s centre for constant weighing. Some mums looked at me like I was crazy when I said I jus use the scales at home Confused

CherryPavlova · 29/08/2019 21:19

Never had and of mine weighed just to be weighed after their birth weight was recorded. They occasionally needed to be weighed for medical reasons, pre surgery etc but otherwise not.

wendz86 · 29/08/2019 21:22

Once they can stand I just did it on my hone scales but only out of interest . Would only properly check if I was worried .

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/08/2019 21:23

1 year check and her 2 year check- unless you have particular concerns I don’t see the need to go more often

mummytobabygirl17 · 29/08/2019 22:00

Thank you everyone. Just me over thinking things x

I haven't taken dd1 (3 in November) since she was around 7/8mo. She has been weighed by the allergy team when she sees them every 6-9 months though and I pop her on our scales occasionally when I need to check for car seat limits or happy nappy guides! She didn't have a 2year check so wasn't weighed then.

Dd2 is nearly 5mo and I've been twice since we got discharged from the midwives at 6 weeks Blush around here they say once every month ideally, but then a friend with a child the same age as dd1 who comes under the same area but is 25mins away was told that she should weigh her weekly until a year!

Sashkin · 29/08/2019 22:10

Annually for us. It’s not like they gain much weight between ages 1-3 (only 1-2kg).

I do measure DS2.5 at home, and occasionally he will climb on the scales at the airport etc so I do have a rough idea of what he weighs, and I can see he isn’t particularly fat or skinny - maybe if he was I would get him weighed more.

MissPepper8 · 30/08/2019 18:27

This is interesting.. Health visitor hasn't seen DS at all since he turned 18 months.

Haven't been told to take him to clinic either. Is this normal? Live in Wales.

Magicmama92 · 31/08/2019 12:00

I only had to get my daughter weighed so much becouse of initial poor weight gain and weight loss. She was vomiting up full feeds so they wanted to keep an eye on her. We found she had a cows milk allergy and once her weight picked up and she went up centiles we stopped going she was about 6 months. She got weighed at her year check and unless I have any concerns il just leave her until her next health visitor appointment.

Sashkin · 31/08/2019 22:56

MissPepper there’s a 30month Ages&Stages developmental assessment, but if your child is in a daycare setting they can do it there. Otherwise no, the next scheduled appointment after that is the pre-school one.

ChildminderMum · 31/08/2019 23:10

Mine was weighed at 6 weeks, 9 months and at a hospital appointment at 23 months.

You don't need to attend HV clinics if you have no concerns. If you do choose to get them weighed, they suggest no more often than monthly.

MissPepper8 · 01/09/2019 11:14

@Sashkin Ah ok thank you, he's first baby so wasn't sure.

CarolineKate · 01/09/2019 11:22

My son is 2 in November. I get in weighed about once every 2 months. Was told its important to do if they ever fall ill you will have a healthy starting weight.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 03/09/2019 18:30

I think I took DD monthly until she was about one (PFB). I’m not sure if DS has been officially weighed since his 6 week check (he’s 2 next month)! I do keep an eye on the centile line he’s tracking by weighing him every now and then at home though.
