Hi

Just wondered if anyone has ever used reuseable nappies, have 2dd and used disposable, ttc 3rd child and was thinking of going greener.

Any tips for me, how many would I need, where to buy how much etc etc

Thanks

{grin}

This post could have been written by me

I has 2 ds's and am thinking of TTC #3 around xmas. Baby fever has struck badly and i was thinking of ways to try and save money and though of reusables.

I have been brave and decided that although ds2 is just turned 3, he is not potty trained and running out of disposables, so have just bought a nappy/wrap combo to try from one of the small ads on this site. I have also dug out some terries that were given to me when ds2 was born. I am ashamed to say I barely looked at them before dismissing them, believeing them to be hard work. I am actually really looking forward to giving them a try and possibly using them from the outset if/when we are blessed with dc3.

Sorry, I know this doesn't answer any of your questions, but I am new here too as of today and thought I would say hello!

I have used reusables on DD from the start - it has saved me sooooo much money, though I did it from an environmental pov

Look at thenappylady.com and there are a couple of people on here who can advise. One that I have found helpful is flame

Look here for bumfluff nappies or nappyzone. Both give lovely advice on the nappy threads and will do starter packs based on your preferences.

Cloth is great

SAHMof1 · 07/08/2007 10:52

Also try the nappy finder for someone local to come to talk to you and do a demo

cloth rocks!!! i too can be contacted throug the small ads but its a good idea to hang out on these threads and get an idea of whats what, everyones nice (ish) lol! Reusables come in diff shapes and sizes to suit your different needs, my site tells you a bit about the diff types as do others and as i say hanging out here lots of people can give you advise, welcome to the addictive world of cloth

witchandchips · 07/08/2007 12:49

cloth is really quite easy, not much extra washing if you are prepared to put nappies in with the copious amounts of sheets and babygros which need doing.

scraping poo and buckets are a bit of a hassle but not when you get into a routine

i found putting on a disposible at night though made things much easier as i would not have to worry about changing after every night feed but others may disagree. Think it is perfectly okay to mix and match

nappyzone · 07/08/2007 12:59

yes i find day cloth no extra hassle and oodles more fun but nightime requires a bit more thought when you require 13 dry hrs and your stash ir running low - sometimes i sposie on a night. I never scrape poo - if it dont roll of it stays on - eeek!

claireybee · 07/08/2007 13:12

Not much extra washing even if you do wash nappies seperately from other stuff-i just do 2 nappy loads a week.
Am the same as nappyzone re poo, don't scrape although if there is a big lump kind of stuck on I will pick it off with loo roll.
Don't find them any more hassle than disposables (which i used for first 3 months full time and until 5 months part time).
It took me a while to use cloth at night cos i was scared of leaks but I bought a few special nighttime nappies, which i then boost and no problems (also solves the problem of your stash running low cos have seperate nappies for day and night). DD does have a HUGE bum at night though! Summer is good cos she just wears pj top but in winter i needed vests/sleepsuits a size bigger to fit over her nappies.

claireybee · 07/08/2007 13:15

Oh I have around 30 nappies which is more than i need when the sun shines and they dry in a day on the line, but about right when i have to dry them on an airer indoors (don't have a tumble dryer and have mostly bamboo nappies which take aaages to dry on an airer)

puffylovett · 07/08/2007 22:59

hi, i use a nappy service - they provide me with 70 prefolds and 6 wraps and collect all the dirty shitty nappies once a week whilst dropping me off lots of fresh clean ones ! all i do is wash the wraps.

i pay £9 per week for this.

The benefits i find are -

  1. being in cloth makes me v aware of changing his bum regularly. Consuqeuntly because i am lazy, he gets loads of nappy free playing and has been rolling & exercising loads. Because nappies are free i just bung a load on the floor and they catch the wee ! Fab !
  2. apparently they potty train faster in cloth because they don't like being in wet dirty nappies when older
  3. I do find that he reacts to the chemicals in the disposables (he wears a huggies at night - again, lazy) but any rashes clear up in cloth nappies
  4. its green !

I've got one ds, 3months and started using cloth 3 days ago and am a total convert. I don't know how I'll use up the disposables I've got

I found it sooooo confusing all the different ones, but saw a lurvey lollipop advisor in my town and she talked me through lots of issues (like do I have a tumble dryer) and helped me pick a few to try. I also got £30 back from the council.

So i'd recommend look up your local lollipop lady, they sell all different ones, will talk you through how to manage the whole thing (buckets, washing etc) and be there for you when you've started and have questions etc.

And check with your council about what you can get from them, some give away tester packs or cashback.

Good luck!

Oh, and I find cloth leak less than disposables

A local advisor/demo is great
