Potty training - start now?!

DD is 2 years 3 months. I really want to have a stab at potty training while the weather is still warm ish so not too many layers of clothes are involved.

I think she’s been ready for a few months but was waiting til after a few long car journeys we had to make in August before going for it. She will sit on potty and toilet but hardly ever actually does any wees or poos on there. She tells me as soon as she needs to go but has been reluctant to take nappy off if she needs a poo. She seems scared to try doing a poo on the toilet.

She goes to nursery 2 mornings a week (weds and Thursday). I had planned to start on Friday so we have Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday at home or nearby to try and break the back of it before she’s back at nursery (and more likely to get distracted).

However... we have just been to the supermarket and she has chosen some peppa pig pants, got home and she’s so incredibly excited she has taken her nappy off and asked for peppa pants on immediately.

I don’t want to quash that excitement so I’ve let her put them on...... shall I just carry on and see how we go today? Or plan to put her in pull ups at nursery tomorrow and Thursday and still start properly on Friday? Very aware I don’t want to get off to a bad start!!!

Grateful for any experienced potty training parents out there who can stop me second guessing myself too much! First timer and admit I have been dreading potty training a bit!! Thanks in advance

Yes, carry on. Take up that enthusiasm.
Nursery staff deal with potty training little ones all the time - they won't be phased by a 2yr month old not wearing a nappy. Smile

Why not, she might get it really quickly. (If she doesn’t I’d advise trying again in a couple of months as she is still quite young). Just make sure you and nursery are being consistent.

Thank you both for replying.

Well we tried for the rest of the day (so about 5 hours). She did one wee on the toilet, very very pleased with herself and lots of praise, 3 accidents, 1 of which I caught half of in the potty.

She seemed a bit upset at the accidents, each time proclaiming “wee!!!” In a tone of voice like “oh no! I’m too late, wee is happening!”. I brushed it off as no big deal. I think I need to watch her like a hawk and prompt her to try much more often. She is in love with the idea of wearing pants though.

I think I’ll put her in a pull up for nursery tomorrow and Thursday, then start again in earnest on Friday. I don’t want to confuse things but also don’t want to set her up to fail.

I know she’s young so no problem at all if we have to leave it and try again, but I do really think she can do it. She knows she’s weeing and will sometimes ask “change me!” Before she’s even weed in her nappy. This has been for a few months so I think it’s possible.

if she had another accident, just be like 'yeah that's where wee comes from!'

and periodically be like, where's the potty?! and have races to it. so next time she starts weeing - wees go on the potty. where's the potty?!

and poo goes home to pooland.

Well if she’s happy to do it, go for it.

I didn’t potty train mine until they were over 3 and they picked it up very quickly
