At what point do you say bugger this?

Now at end of day four potty training and was the worst it has been - no successes just lots of puddles and piles of poo on the floor! My dd will sit on the potty/toilet but not for very long. She will clutch herself when she feels that she is going and gets upset with herself when she sees the 'mess'.
She is 2.6, very articulate and confident and showed all the signs of being 'ready'. I don't want to create a rod for my own back - looking at similar threads some mums have found that putting their little one back in nappies only added to the problem. But neither do I want to distress her.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

i think if she is getting upset and ur getting stress then it proberly best to leave it for another few weeks maybe. ive been potty training for a year and a half he can do it just cant be bothered

MerlinsBeard · 06/08/2007 20:40

give it one more day fletchie amd then have abreak for a few weeks. DS1 had a few days of many accidents before he properly 'got it'.

jaspersleeve, sorry but its you thats lazy not your son. a year and a half is ridiculous for PT

hermykne · 06/08/2007 20:42

after 2 potty training experiences i honestly feel they are not ready til 2yrs 10mths and then u focus on it for a week 10days and u ll crack it.
its not fair for them to get upset over weeing away from the loo, and causes unnecessary stress.
what IS the rush with training?

LOL Malory Towers over the shitty pants!! I know four days is nothing but it feels like 4 years!
Think I will give it a few more days - and if ,after then, no signs of progress will take a break.
How long does it take on "average" - if there is such a thing!!!

I had similar a few weeks back with my dd (also 2.6) - I gave it a week and then finally gave up when she was refusing point blank to sit on the potty or toilet.

I have put her into pull ups and she does ask sometimes and today I took receipt of a musical potty and she has sat on it a few times to try and get it to work but produced nothing.

I am going on hols in 3 weeks so I may try again the week before we go.... or I may try the week we get back but then she starts pre-school.

moljam · 06/08/2007 21:17

wheelybug id try once you get back.i used to work in a preschool and lots of the parents found potty training easier when dc at prechool as we helped too.just remember to take in plenty spare pants!
fletchie 4 days isnt long though it must feel it,id give it bit longer.
i hated pottytraining and when planning dc3 forgot id have to do it all again!

Wheelybug · 06/08/2007 23:08

thanks moljam - we have a week inbetween hols and starting pre-school which would be ideal other than the fact we will have builders in so not sure if that might cause issues !!!

fletchie · 07/08/2007 14:22

Thanks for the advice.
Am going to give it a couple more days but feel like i am not getting anywhere - she grabs herself before going - so I put her (with a lot of bribery) on the potty/toilet, she sits there for two seconds, clambers off. Then two minutes later pees/poos on floor...aaargghhh!!
Can anyone suggets where I am going so wrong - I need to keep her on potty for longer but she just won't ...is a stubborn little madam!

Sounds like she doesn't quite get it yet. IMHO, it's a switch. Once they've got it, it's easy. Before that it's a nightmare. I'd say keep trying for another couple of days and if you don't see an improvement, get the nappies out again and wait a couple of months.

keyhole · 07/08/2007 14:32

Good luck - keep at it! It is a nightmare though at the beginning!

stealthsquiggle · 07/08/2007 14:37

We had special books which we read only while DS was on the potty, which helped keep him there long enough - but I may never be able to read "We're going on a Bear Hunt" ever ever again....
