Nature's Wind Sequence

Does anyone know anything about this woman: www.babycues.info/about/philippa/ or have any idea what "Nature's Wind Sequence" looks like? I'm loath to shell out for a book without any recommendation from someone I trust (or the MN hive mind) - but quite a lot of what she says seems to chimes with DD2.

Very, very succinctly: she reckons many babies who have a fractious 'witching hour' actually have overloaded digestive systems, and need to be burped better - according to a magical secret technique you're only allowed if you splurge on a consultation with her or buy her book. A lot of what she describes fits with DD2, who is very unsettled and mostly miserable when awake.

Just wondering if anyone's tried this? It's about my fifth self-discovered internet diagnosis, and I'm very aware I'm probably clutching at straws!

How old is she? I felt like my baby cried every second he was awake when he was a newborn. He had dreadful wind and colic and I tried everything I could think of, different holds, a million different burping techniques, medicines, massage etc. He had mild reflux too but I thought maybe he had a milk allergy, he was too hot/cold, overstimulated, too tired, hungry, too full, my letdown was too strong etc etc.

The truth was he was just a baby who had wind/colic and cried a lot. Nothing I could do really, he just had to grow out of it, which he did after a few months. It feels endless but does get easier, if you've got a sling they help, and dummies. When they can move around more they can get the wind out better Smile

Thanks Bianca. I too have wondered about a cow's milk allergy, as well as thinking it's colic or reflux. The various internet searches I've tried looking for solutions led me to this one (qualified!) woman who argued that what we believe to be a normal whingy period that they grow out of can in fact be avoided with her method. An attractive prospect, I'm sure you'll agree! So I was hoping someone might be able to say "I did this and it's magic!" - or even "I did this and it's bollocks, don't get your hopes up". She's ten weeks, so hopefully close to growing out of it, but in the meantime I'm Googling miracle cures while pacing the floor with the sling on. She won't take a dummy.

I’m four weeks in with my newborn and can agree that while I’d like to think there is a milk allergy so I could magically eliminate the lactose and all would be well, it’s wind that causes all our problems.
Babies are very poorly designed.

I finally caved and bought the PDF format. It came out to $20 in US Dollars which I thought was very reasonable. The book is 235 pages long and full of a ton of information. I identified with this woman from the start, much like you looking for some magical cure to all the crying. Her information is pretty incredible. It's a nice insight into why my baby is crying and she gives you many ways in which you can validate that her interpretation of the cues are likely correct. I say likely because, well, babies can't talk. As for Nature's wind sequence, that is why I bought the book. Because it's so much different than what I was taught in the birthing classes that I went to, I'm pretty confused and I feel like that's interfering with my ability to fully play it out. Instead of tapping your baby's back (which she says is actually not good because it breaks burps up into smaller pockets of air thereby meaning more burps are needed to get each pocket of air out of the throat or esophagus, and then they more easily go down into the stomach and end up having to pass through the intestines which is what causes the baby pain), that you should actually rub the sides of the stomach and the middle in a way that gets them to flex their diaphragm and learn to release the burps that way. She also says that the traditional method of tapping the back in order to release a burp begins to be Associated by the baby with pain and then they start to reflux silently by swallowing their burps as they come up. I think the rest of the 235 pages is full of great information, and there are example biological sleep schedules, biological feeding schedules, and then the biological digestive info. The info is relevant even when your baby is not a newborn, but I'm not sure how old your baby is now. My son is just shy of 8 weeks and started "The Witching Hour" last week. I don't eat dairy so I'm not sure that that would be the problem, but the lactose in your own milk can be an issue. In her book she also says you should be feeding one breast at a time only so that the baby can get the initial milk that comes out watery and full of lactose as well as the hindmilk which is thicker and essentially the milk that makes them full. I also appreciated her list of foods that she believes make a baby sick. Anyway like I said there is quite a bit of info in there. Not sure where you're at now but I can recommend it. I think this lady is a genius, even though I haven't totally gotten the wind sequence to work 100% for us but I do feel like it makes me try new things with my baby, and put a lot more effort into analyzing his cues and trying to help him.

Babies are not poorly designed, and that is what this lady's book is all about. They do not come out lacking and we are just incorrectly top with their cues mean. After reading this book I absolutely feel differently about what my baby is trying to tell me, and I am now able to help him in many different ways that I wasn't before. Something from this book that really hit me hard is that she explains how what we are taught to be hunger cues are actually not. They are the cues of a baby trying to stimulate digestion or to let you know that they have trapped air between their throat and stomach, which is where it should be for you to burp them. We are taught that a few burps is sufficient and you can lay a baby down, and we are taught but it's okay to feed a baby to sleep. It's totally not. I know have to sit up during night feeds and burp my baby for quite some time, but he sleeps much longer through the night only at 7 weeks old. This author Philippa Murphy is a godsend in the world of newborns, and advocates for them on the premise that they are not lacking and not poorly designed.

I did buy this . It was amazzzzzzzinggg. Phillipa is on another level. The book is long however once you learn the 10 steps to getting a burp out everything changes. Used to have the witches hour and short sleeps purple cry every arvo. Then I followed her steps and it changed and I started having peaceful arvos . Love her
