Thirsty one year old

My 1 year old has started drinking triple the amount of water he would usually drink and I wanted to ask if this is a sign of teething. He currently has several teeth cutting at once and has been awake most nights due to this but he has went from not drinking at all during the night to finishing a large cup of water, as well as a big increase during the day. I am going to book a doctors appointment for next week to have him checked for diabetes, just to be on the safe side but I wanted to ask if this was a common side effect so my mind can be put at ease

TIA

Diabetes could kill quicker than that. Get him checked today. A fingerprick test costs half a pound or so and takes seconds.

I don't know if it's a sign of teething but my eldest had this, along with incredibly heavy nappies, hunger and gradual weight loss which turned out to be diabetes.
You can go to the walk in centre, take a sample of his urine, although sugars don't always show, but a trip there will put your mind at ease rather than worrying.

I agree you should check nothing serious but my one year old has thirsty days like this-I also think she just likes using cup on her own!

Agree with poster above. Get this checked today. This shouldn’t wait as diabetes needs to be ruled out ASAP.

Thanks for the replies. I took your advice and called NHS 24 to see about getting tested for diabetes today. I just had a call back from them saying they aren't concerned and just to make a normal GP app to double check his blood/urine next week

I don't see how a diagnosis of diabetes can be excluded over the phone. If it is, he needs to see a doctor very urgently. If it's not, then fine, but an immediate finger prick test is required to rule out type one diabetes in an abnormally thirsty child. Hopefully it's just the heat, but if you have any doubts at all, take him to A&E. If he starts vomiting, smells like nail polish remover, has trouble breathing or becomes very lethargic, you need to take him to A&E immediately.

He wasn't showing any other symptoms which is why I hadn't phoned NHS immediately and planned to just get a normal doctors app once they re opened. I called NHS 24 after reading the replies and the doctor I spoke to asked me lots of questions and concluded that due to their being no other symptoms he wasn't concerned but to follow up with the doctors app as I had planned. I took my son to the doctors yesterday and they did the blood test and it was negative. Most likely down to teething
