Formula feeding do I count the extra oz?

Hey,

So making up DD2 bottles pour in 4oz of water add the 4 scoops and this takes the contents of the bottle up to 5oz.
I'm aware I only made up 4oz but because there's more in the bottle now for DD to consume does that mean she'd be having the 5oz or the 4oz I have made sort of thing?!
I know it's related to the mixture mixing etc just wondered what others do - do you count it or not?
I'm not concerned about DD feeding and she's content after a fill however an oz could make a difference to whether she's had sometimes possibly the 1oz or 2oz.

I'd count it as 5oz since that is what volume she is actually getting.

It relates to how much scoops, so 4oz.

It's 4oz

Its 4oz. The nutrition is in the scoop so it's always the number of scoops.

Eltay · 21/08/2019 22:16

Agree with other posters. Its 4oz

blahblahblahblahhh · 21/08/2019 22:21

Overthinking lol! 4oz of water plus 4 scoops is 4oz feed!

Fatted · 21/08/2019 22:25

Does it really matter? If there are no other feeding issues, I don't really think you need to be thinking about it to this level of detail.

WhyBirdStop · 21/08/2019 22:30

There's a really good old mn thread on this, explaining the science (the op used pipettes to measure) and how the 'extra volume' is in fact just tiny air bubbles. Google it and it comes up. It's a 4oz feed

CarolineKate · 22/08/2019 06:58

I've actually seen someone message a formula company about this. And they said to count the extra ounce.

TokenGinger · 22/08/2019 07:07

It's 4oz. If you leave the milk to settle (I.e. the bubbles disappear), it shows as 4oz or just over in the bottle.

As PP said, the nutrition is in the scoops. Baby has had 4oz equivalent of powder.

riotlady · 22/08/2019 09:26

I remember worrying about this when DD was little but as pp have said, count the scoops, so it’s 4oz

I've often wondered this too! I count the total because I see it as, if they had drank from 5oz down to 4oz they had had something, haven't they? So I count the total volume rather than the nutritious scoops of formula. I guess it makes sense from a nutrition point of view. I guess, as others have said, if you've no concerns scout feeding and growth then it doesn't matter too much.

Years ago I made bottles for my brother. I’d make them with boiling water (that was the guideline in 1992) then they’d go in the fridge. An 8 oz bottle always looked like at least 9 when it went in the fridge and back to 8 the next morning when it was cooled and had stood over night.

I think though we are over thinking. If baby is gaining weight appropriately and is content then don’t stress. If you were BF this is what would guide you.
