Dear mums - Do you find it overwhelming to do the school / after school runs? If someone else were to do it for you, how likely are you to consider the proposition?

I only do the school run on my day off. Other days my childminder does it.

No, not at all, though parking can be a bit of a nightmare. My dh and I each do the school run on our shorter days. It’s nice to be present at school and to spend that time with them when we work long hours other days. No, I personally wouldn’t want anyone to help me with it. If I did, I suppose I’d hire someone but I feel like we work hard so that we can have the time to do these things.

I enjoy it when I do the runs - would not advise you relinquish all as there are good memories to be made. But I'm glad I don't do them all the time!

Surely that's what childminders are for?

Dc will go to before school and after school clubs when he starts next week, so someone already will do it for me.

I used to do the school run when DD was in reception classes, but then as DH was traveling overseas, I needed to get to work on time myself so we had an Au pair through the recession and then a minder did the hour in the mornings and school run after that. DH and I were able to get back to doing it in Y5/Y6, and now it’s mostly DH but sometimes me in secondary (DD had been able to do it alone in late primary and enjoyed it on occasion for independence but she needs too much gear in secondary to walk that distance).

After school has always been an after school club either collecting her from school or walking across the yard to it. In Y5/Y6, she was coming home after extracurricular activities herself. But in secondary, she has sport every afternoon and a lot of gear and books so DH or I collect her on our own way home - the times work well.

I enjoy doing it on my day off, and if I have a late start or early finish. On other days my children go to after school club.

When I only had one child to think about, I deliberately arranged my working hours so that I could do the morning school run - it was important-ish to both of us. I’ve never been in the position of being able to pick up from school whilst also working - it was one of my favourite things about being on maternity leave though.

Now I do drop-off to the childminder and she does the school run, largely so I can pick them up slightly earlier in the evening (toddler DC2 would struggle with the later time). Not doing the school run any more isn’t the end of the world, but I do miss it.

I never really feel it as a specific stressful thing tbh - it puzzles me when parents describe it as a major stress. Knowing I then have to rush to work immediately afterwards and be ready to focus on something different right up til it’s time to run out the door and collect them again is challenging, but that’s the nature of being a working parent regardless of who does the school run.

We chat on the way (to school or to childminder) - it’s quite a nice relaxed time of day tbh!
