Newborn sleeping arrangements

We are expecting our 1st baby next week, we have bought a Next 2 Me crib for our bedroom for overnight sleeping and a Sleepyhead for her to sleep in in the evenings when she is downstairs with us before we go up to bed. However, I had the health visitor out today and she said they advise against the use of Sleepyheads due to the SIDs risk which has obviously worried me. What is everyone else using for their newborns to sleep in when downstairs? Thanks

We had a baby box. It’s a specific cardboard box for babies to sleep in and we had that downstairs till she outgrew it. We had, and still have, her snoozing on one of us a lot in the early weeks but the box was great.

I’ve got a next to me style cot and it’s absolutely brilliant, you’ll love it! I roll over and can scoop her up for a feed with my eyes pretty much closed, so handy.

I thought sleepyheads were not a 'sleep positioner' so not included in that advice. What were you going to put the sleepyhead in/on?

I used our pushchair bassinet downstairs and sleepyhead/cot upstairs for my recent baby .( Our bassinet is approved for overnight sleeping). Tbh, you might not get a choice whatever you plan! Dc1 hated the Moses basket that I bought so it went to a friend virtually unused. Dc3 preferred sleeping on me for the first 3 mths and then only in her cot upstairs or a moving pushchair!

I just paid postage which was under a fiver. You can buy them too.

My kids always slept in their own room at night. During the day we had a travel cot downstairs for naps.

notso · 19/08/2019 22:22

Mine slept in the pram or Moses basket downstairs.

Omega369 · 19/08/2019 22:25

DS just napped on the sofa - we're keen on not wasting money

I’ve just bought a wee moses basket from aldi for downstairs. It’s £29.99 and that includes the stand. Total bargain if you ask me!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 19/08/2019 22:30

My first wouldn't sleep in a moses basket, bassinet, or even on the sofa. She'd only sleep on one of us.

My 2wo DS is following the same pattern except I'm not going to stress about it this time! Co sleeping and baby wearing from the getgo.

Good luck with your little sleep thief bundle of joy Grin

Mine didn't sleep in the evening. Just fussed and cried from about 5pm so we played hours of pass the baby.

We had a Moses basket downstairs for day naps and a safe place to put him while I did chores etc and a next to me for night time.

firstimemamma · 19/08/2019 23:05

Our baby had a next to me crib in our room for night time and a cot in his nursery for day time naps (which he now uses for day and nighttime sleep age 1).

We've never had a specific thing for him to nap in downstairs! In the early weeks sometimes he napped downstairs in the pram. Most of the time he napped on me Smile

Never had a sleepyhead.

AnxiousFTM · 19/08/2019 23:05

The health visitor said they aren’t breatheable and can easily overheat in the Sleepyhead. We have a long flat chaise part on the sofa so were just planning to put it on that while we sit next to her.

We had a Moba moses basket and two stands, one for our room and the other for downstairs. I mention it’s Moba and not a traditional wicker one as the basket is plastic and in one piece. It was easy to carry between rooms if baby was asleep.

Baby slept on mattress, swaddled with cellular blankets. Nothing else until he got a bit bigger and then we used gro-bags.

We will be doing the same this time around.

Moses basket

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 19/08/2019 23:13

Moses basket or pram bassinet (depending on what kind of pram you have some eg the uppababy are breathable and suitable for sleeping these days).

Browniee · 19/08/2019 23:15

@AnxiousFTM
We have the same set up as you, next2me cot in our bedroom for night time and sleepyhead downstairs for daytime sleeping. It worked really well for the first few months and then our daughter became super aware of everything going on downstairs and got over stimulated so we decided to put her up to bed with the video monitor upstairs for a couple of hours while we ate tea and watched some TV and she sleeps a lot better now without the distractions.

I know HVs aren’t keen on sleepyheads as mine was a bit funny about ours but I read somewhere that the SIDs risk is for sleepyheads is for overnight sleeping not supervised naps.

Good luck with your new baby xxx

Csleeptime · 19/08/2019 23:22

My two loved the Moses basket although often napped on playmat when very young, just fell asleep where they were.

csam · 19/08/2019 23:26

I used a sleepyhead for my LG who's now almost 4 for all her naps. I placed it into her next to me crib at night. She survived and I never heard of risks with it for overnight sleeping! She loved it and slept really well.

Sure you'll get advice about good and bad things to use and risks but ultimately do what works for you and your baby.

Enjoy x

Sicktobloodydeath · 20/08/2019 14:32

The sleepyhead brand is the only sleep nest that is breathable. Health visitors often misconstrue this with other brands

Good luck Flowers
