Bambino Mio Nappies

My DD is 3 months and I’m currently using Kit & Kin eco disposable nappies which are fab. Now I’m thinking of moving to reusable nappies from Bambino Mio, although my DH needs some convincing!

I plan to show him this thread so could anyone who has used Bambini Mio (or other reuseable nappies) alleviate his concerns which are...

  1. Do the used nappies smell while waiting a day or two to be washed?
  2. Does poo leak through from the liner to the nappy?
  3. Do the nappies get stained after a while?

DH reckons older baby/toddler poo will be easier to deal with using disposables, whereas I reckon poo is poo no matter which nappy you use, may as well use the environmentally friendly type and save some pennies at the same time.

Older baby poo is easier in reusables. You shake the nappy contents down the loo, and are left with a not very dirty nappy to put in the bucket.

Reusable nappies are great, but I’m not personally a fan of bambino mios. The kind you take apart (as opposed to all in ones are easier to clean and faster to dry). I really liked tots bots bamboozles with a motherease airflow wrap for mine. They literally never leaked. They really are no trouble but you do need the time to do the extra washing. I had to switch back to disposables when I went back to work as my hours just meant neither of us had the time anymore. Highly recommend them though. The Nappy Lady website has a quiz on it that will recommend some ones that fit what you’re looking for.

  1. not if you store them properly. We stared with a pail (no need to soak) but quickly moved to a Kangacare wet bag (Amazon) - zip it up and it’s leak and smell proof, put whole thing in washing machine unzipped, no need to touch the nappies or smell them ever.

  2. no, that’s the point of a line 😄

  3. not if you pre-wash them (so just a rinse (cold) before regular wash). I do ‘pre wash’ with no detergent, 40 degree cycle with rinse afterwards. If they do get stained, put them on the windowsill for a day or 2 and the sun will get rid of the stain.

I don’t like Bambino Mio personally as they’re not very absorbent, they’re only microfibre. As the baby’s bladder grows and they wet more you might find you have leaks and you’ll have to get some bamboo or hemp boosters. Bambino Mio also seem to be quite big so might be too big for a 3 month old (I know they’re adjustable but other brands are a slimmer fit)

Bambino Mio are my favourite brand. I’ve used reusable nappies with all four of my DC and used lots of different types/brands, I truly rate Bambino Mio the highest. Very cheap during an Aldi baby event too.

They don’t stink, you store them in a closed bucket between washes and wash them with your usual non-bio stuff (no softener though, it ruins the absorbency).

I use reusable fleece liners. Toddler poo is easier because it can be tipped down the loo. Sometimes poo goes on the actual nappy but it’s not the end of the world. And yeah, they can get stained but you don’t see the stains when they’re worn.

If you hang them in sun, any stains magically disappear too!

We use Bambino Mios but I would test a few types as different brands fit differently. You can hire trial packs that have various different makes so you can see what fits best. The Miosolos can sometimes leak on skinnier babies.

  1. No, we store them in a bucket with a lid, I mean you can smell it when you take the lid off, but not otherwise.
  2. I cut up some fleece to use as liners, it sometimes goes round the side onto the nappy, but it all goes in the wash anyway, so I don't think it really matters!
  3. No they haven't got stained, although as long as they don't smell I don't think this matters - hanging them on the line on a sunny day often removes any staining.
