Musical chairs with rooms - help!

We live in a Victorian conversion with three floors, and currently have one 16-month old DD.

She sleeps in a cot in the box room nursery right next to our bedroom. We have another bedroom downstairs (with a Hemnes day bed - this cannot be moved out for various reasons and there's no space for another bed), and another big bedroom upstairs (with a double bed).

We are TTC, and assuming we have a baby next summer, I'm scratching my head over where everyone should sleep. Should we move DD to the downstairs bedroom once the baby arrives? Pro: she only needs to move once, and she will have her own room. Con: can a 2-year old sleep in an adult bed? Will we need to put a baby gate on her door to stop her getting out at night?

Or should we buy her a toddler bed to use in the nursery for 6 months, then move her once the baby goes into the nursery? Pro: she'll be close by, and the bed will be more age-appropriate. Con: seems wasteful, and presume she will be disturbed by baby crying next door.

This is a ridiculous problem to post about, but I've been pondering for so long, I wonder if a fresh brain can spot a good solution I've missed!

A 2 year old can definitely sleep in an adult bed. Mine did.

I would wait though...keep the baby in your room with you...and DD in her nursery right next door. You could do this for a year and move DD downstairs when she's that bit older...then move the baby into her nursery.

Thank you henny - you see, I'm worried the baby (in our room) will cry and disturb DD. DD is a terrible sleeper at the best of times. What if the baby is also a bad sleeper?

But I think you might be right, this way seems better.

Oh and it'd only be 6 months, as I'll be moving the baby out of our room at that time, and they won't both fit in the nursery.

DD will either sleep through or just adjust to it. You can't protect her from the new baby :) even though it feels you should.
