Eight month old not sitting up

DS is eight months, he crawls well, although is quicker using hands and feet than when he uses his knees (we have hardwood floors so I thought this might be about grip), he pulls himself up to standing on furniture, people, whatever he can grab onto.He sits without issue in a highchair, even those square wooden ones you get when out and about with no support. He doesn't sit well on the floor. He topples over to the side, or just rolls over and crawls off. Everything I've read implies that sitting and playing is a precursor to crawling, but it's like he skipped a bit. He's very strong can climb over the back of the sofa, up the bedstead, and I've had to drop his cot to the lowest level to stop him trying to climb out. His back and neck seem strong, he's had plenty of tummy time from a young age.

Why can't he sit?! PFB so no frame of reference and DNs both seemed to sit before crawling.

Because they're all different. DS didn't sit unaided till nearly a year as I recall, then he crawled and didn't walk till 18 months - all this was in the "normal" range tho later than a lot of his peers.

He was, and is, fine. Turned into a highly intelligent, sporty young man.

Mine was 9 months! Just starting to worry by then but it all happened in a rush and she was walking before some of her peers. They all do things in their own time.

I think it's just that he's so active in every other way more so than peers, but he just can't sit up very well! It threw me, if he wasn't doing the other things, I'd think oh it'll come, but how can he climb up his toy box, and throw all the toys out while standing and holding on with one hand, but he can't sit on the floor 🤷.
Thanks for the reassurance that he'll get there.

My 3 boys all did things at different times. I think the fact that your DS is pulling himself up already is an excellent indicator that he is absolutely fine and by the time he is one he will be running about and you'll wish he was still immobile. Don't worry about the non-sitting thing, he will do it very soon!
