My 8 year old has chicken pox and we have a newborn baby

Hi everyone,

Quick advice needed, my 8 year old son seems to have chicken pox but there isn't many, not itchy and he's fine in himself.
I have a nearly 5 week old baby girl and I'm worried if she catches them...
I have kept him away from her as soon as I seen them today but I'm a little worried and wonder if I need to take her the doctors?
My son could possibly go to his grandparents if that would be the safest thing???
Thanks 😊😊😊

The incubation period for chickenpox is about 2 weeks and a child is infectious for 2 days before the rash appears. So unless you isolated your son a few days ago he may have already passed it on. I'd speak to HV to be on the safe side.

My then 4 week old son caught chicken pox from my then 3 year old daughter. He was covered head to toe but didn’t seem too bothered at all. The gp referred us to children’s hospital to be checked out as he was so little, but he was totally fine. Just in case your wee one dies catch them, try not to worry too much.

If you are breastfeeding and have had chickenpox yourself, the baby is immune.

My newborn didn't catch them from her 2 year old sister - it isn't inevitable. Fingers crossed that baby doesn't get them!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 13/08/2019 22:34

My DD caught it at around 8/9 weeks. It was very mild as she was breastfed but drs said she would probably get it again as she was under one.
Fingers crossed for you.

Are you breastfeeding? If not I would see your gp or health visitor.

@chilledteacher @weechops @AngelasAshes @ChipInTheSugar @AnnoyedByAlfieBear @LeekMunchingSheepShagger thank you all so much for your responses!!!

My daughter isn't breast feed (I'm on medication 🙄)
I've only just seen them today so he's been near and touching 😔
I'm going to ring the doctors tomorrow morning and see what they say. My HV never calls back when I call her 🙄
She was 3 weeks early cos of Pre-eclampsia and weighing 5 pound 1, she was 6 pound 3 at 19 days old so is gaining weight...
I've had chicken pox as a child so I should be immune but my other half hasn't 😬😬😬

My Youngest is breastfed and he still caught them from older DS last year, and it wasn't mild at all.

But it's not inevitable that the baby will get them. Try not to worry too much, just keep an eye out

My son was 100% breastfed at 2 months old when my 5 year old came down with chicken pox. No spots for 2 weeks then he was covered head to toe! Didnt bother him much though!

Nomes29 · 13/08/2019 23:14

@JeremyCorbynsCoat aww bless 😔 was did he have them long? Hopefully it didn't effect him.
Going to keep an eye on her and hope she doesn't get them.
Thank you for your advice 😊

When you talk to the Doctor do mention your OH hasn't had it, as well. They may want to put him on anti-virals (probably not though) but he does need to watch out - and take any extreme symptoms if he gets it very seriously.

Your husband should have the vaccination quickly!’

DS got chicken pox when Dd was 4 weeks old; she came out in spots two weeks later. I’d had it and she was 100% breastfed at the time. She was fine, just a bit more sleepy and very spotty.

JeremyCorbynsCoat · 14/08/2019 06:54

@Nomes29 he didn't have them long but he did yet a secondary infection, but after a course of antibiotics he was right as rain. He has a lot of nasty spots but none seem to have scarred apart from one on his willy and one on his bum cheek!

The ones in the nappy area are a bloody pain
