@Byebyefriend interesting, thanks. How old is your son?

Family loo seat all the way (and one of those little steps if they need it, also useful for hand washing).

Mine used the potty a handful of times, but would sort of stand up with it still attached and cause spillage issues.

We needed a step with 2 steps, iyswim, but once that was there, my boys had no issues.
Iirc, we had a B&Q seat, and a jojo step.

We have a couple of plastic pots, a toilet step and one that looks like an actual toilet.

Doesn’t really matter, they all work.

I do like the toilet seat adapters for smaller bottoms, they work great.

In truth I haven’t found one that doesn’t work. Some are more fun, others more practical, none were expensive and having a few around means never hunting for one and never having to get out the bath so they can use the toilet.

My daughter uses potties, toilet seat, etc, but this oxo tot seat has brilliant for when out and about (she won't use a full size toilet without a seat like this on top). It converts from a potty to a toilet seat but folds pretty small for my changing bag. https://www.completecareshop.co.uk/toileting-aids/toilet-reducer-rings-and-bidets/oxo-tot-2-in-1-go-potty-green-view-large?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsDMkaeA5AIVhrTtCh2iiw6iEAkYASABEgLwRPDBwE

I bought a £30 potty my son won’t sit on. He’s happy to sit on the peppa feckin pig one my friend lent me. Don’t be me op, spend max £4 on a potty, and the rest on wine

Runoutofgas · 13/08/2019 17:56

We decided we couldn't be bothered with the faff of using a potty and then having to transition to the toilet too so bought a seat to put on the toilet. Complete success thankfully.
Haven't tried it on DS2 as he's only 15 months at the moment.

Thesearmsofmine · 13/08/2019 18:00

We just have the most basic one and a toilet seat from Ikea. My ds3 was terrified of using the toilet for a while so potty it was until he was happy on the toilet(still prefers the potty for poo).

We got a travel potty which we trained on for 2 days then moved onto a toilet insert and any old one works for us. The travel potty is actually quite useful to keep in the car for emergencies

Byebyefriend · 13/08/2019 18:24

He is 2 years 9 months now, potty training started 2 years 3 months cracked wees quickly but took a couple of months before he would do a poo on the potty regularly (no accidents just waited for his nap/bedtime nappy to do it)

Sage advice. I will take heed

We used the Ikea one with the green insert, it was easy to empty and clean. DD had just turned two but is very tall and she found this one comfortable.

Byebyefriend · 13/08/2019 20:44

I’d buy it when you intend to use it. You don’t want it used for anything other that a potty, no point encouraging them to play with it to get use to it only to have to re teach them you don’t play with it/tip it up use it as a hat once it’s got bodily fluids in it. It’s just a plastic pot it’s not scary or requires pre warning. You didn’t buy shoes months before he walked to get him use to them did you? You bought them when requires and put them on. If you want to introduce the idea of a potty get a book/doll with a toy potty.

I’d also recommend oh crap book

Honestly just got to piundland amd save yourself the money.

They're all basically plastic buckets to piss in.

I have a tall boy and found that some potties eg at nursery weren't quite big enough and he would leak over the front if he wasn't sitting exactly right on it. We had the IKEA green and white one at home - green bit lifts out to empty - which was a better shape. Probably less relevant if you have a girl. A relative also had one which was really awkward to empty into the toilet, not sure what it was about the shape exactly that was a problem but was very annoying! So I would to for the IKEA one again. Totally agree not to spend very much on it though. Some kids prefer toilet seat, others prefer potty so it's useful to have both until you see how you go. Good luck!
