What did your baby pull up on?

As title really - our nearly 9 month old is unlikely to crawl (reflux, pukes when on tummy). She’s been a confident sitter since 5 months and is now VERY frustrated that she can’t stand.

She can easily pull up using our hands and ‘walk’ holding on to us, but none of our furniture is low enough for her to pull up on despite her best efforts.

Are there any toys that are stable enough for her to do this on? Happy to spend whatever it takes to stop the frustrated whining! Her push along walker, activity table and toy box all fall over when she tries.

I know people always say I’ll regret helping her walk but this has been going on for nearly six weeks and the poor girl is getting SO bad-tempered!

Old fashioned walker weighed down with books although these aren’t light enough for them to push.

My ds had this walker here which didn’t tip easily.
Mine cruised on the furniture -
Sofa and coffee tables. Both of mine were reflux babies and they both crawled.

Oh and I did the holding hands thing for my dd - ended up doing it for months 😂
Ds walked at 9 months.

PrayingandHoping · 12/08/2019 19:52

My friends baby pulled himself up the first time on my dog Tuffies nest bed 😂

Well my DD didn't start pulling herself up til she was 11 months and same for walking holding our hands but even then she didn't properly get going with either til about 12 months. The first thing she pulled herself up on was our guinea pig's cage Grin then the bottom shelf thing on the changing table, then her cotbed, then as she got more confident little tables, TV unit, sofa, playpen (in and out), outside her jumperoo, bookcase, now she can just pull herself up holding the wall or a person's legs.

We have a large footstool which we put in the centre of the lounge and she would literally circle it for an hour at a time! It was from IKEA and not that expensive. She's played with it more than any toy we've ever bought!

lorisparkle · 12/08/2019 20:27

My ds2 used the sofa to pull himself up on then cruises around it. It is hard finding a walker that is heavy enough for them to walk with. My ds's favourite toy was a giraffe that you dropped balls down. It was sturdy enough for them to hold themselves in a standing position but you could still play sitting down.

Rachelover40 · 12/08/2019 20:29

Mine used to pull himself up on the magazine rack and coffee table.

lorisparkle · 12/08/2019 20:32

It looks like they don't make the giraffe any more. it is a Fisher price sit to stand giraffe activity centre and was really popular with visiting children as well!

Activity cubes are good, the B Toys wooden one is great my DS used it loads before he started walking and still plays with it now at 18 months

Sofa, beds, TV stand, those Ikea shelves which are big squares, chairs, cardboard boxes, stairgate, pushchair wheel (big wheels), washing machine, oven, kitchen cupboards, bedside tables, cot sides. We don't have a coffee table but DS1 used to pull up on the coffee table.

Don't worry, she's probably just a bit little yet. When she gets there with the coordination and arm strength she'll be pulling up on everything. I doubt nothing in your house is low enough :) It is SO draining in that stage where they want to be more mobile than they are, but she will get there. In the meantime, invest in earplugs and gin, and go out a lot. If you can find some good indoor playgroups with low play equipment that might be something she'd like. Or just go for walks with the buggy.

DS2 doesn't really pull up on toys at all because they are all too light and unstable for him. He will use dining chairs as baby walkers and he has recently started to pull up on the toy arch he had when he was much littler and use that as one as well, but we have a wooden wagon from ikea (I need to put it into a better position for him) and a plastic walker thing and he will only walk with these occasionally if we stand him up behind them.

DS1 had the ELC wooden wagon and that was much better than the ikea one which I don't like and regret buying.

BertieBotts · 12/08/2019 20:36

They don't seem to make it any more, but this one, although ours had wider wheels. Maybe you'll find one on a facebook selling site?

A vtech walker which is really light and moves so I had to hold still whilst he pulled himself up on it. Also a garage at baby group. Then, ball pit at soft play, tv cabinet, couch, bars of cot etc

Theonssausage · 12/08/2019 20:45

Our DD had a difficult start and was assessed for the first two years. She didn't crawl or pull herself up at 9 months. The physios at hospital used this ELC lights and sounds activity centre to help her and we ended up buying it for her - it was a huge hit as it was very entertaining and kept her standing and helping her with her leg and arm muscles. She didn't really crawl but went straight to walking at 11 months. We still have it and kids who come round love playing with it too.

hooraysuperworm · 12/08/2019 21:31

Thanks all - she is a midget (I’m 5’1’’) and our sofa and coffee table are unusually high which doesn’t help! The living room is also the only room that doesn’t have hardwood floors, so if she’s going to practise that’s the place to do it.

She’s super stocky (poor girl inherited my Mediterranean build) with VERY strong legs and weighs a lot more than you would think by looking at her, so I think that although she’s strong enough to stand for ages, pulling up is tricky due to lack of height and lots of sturdy weight to heave up.

I am seriously tempted to get ear defenders until she masters this. I’m a teacher so not unused to constant noise but this whining is something else entirely 😩

Sofa, nest of tables, coffee table, small table DS1 sits at for snack time/drawing, beds, us and our legs. He pulls himself up on things that are too low and stands with his bum in the air too! You might find she does that if given the opportunity? My 1st was a later crawler and so didn't get to stuff to pull up on so understand your issue, I used to sit him by the bed or in the cot with some toys and he'd practice his pulling up there.

tappitytaptap · 13/08/2019 06:57

PS totally understand being driven mad by the whining. Plenty of opportunities to practice interspersed with walks/trips put in the buggy to give you a break and her some new things to look at!

2childrenandout · 13/08/2019 07:18

This from John Lewis is one of the few things we've got that doesn't tip.

BertieBotts · 13/08/2019 13:55

Oh that John Lewis one looks very similar in design to the old ELC one. Better than ikea.

hooraysuperworm · 13/08/2019 18:21

Thanks all - I’ve found a wooden walker and an activity garden on Facebook marketplace so am going to take your suggestions and rearrange ‘her’ part of the living room to give her lots of pulling up opportunities.

Today she reached new levels of desperation - managed to push the button to unclip her buggy straps and hoisted herself half out using the belly bar while on a walk. Then later in the supermarket she got so whiny in the trolley that I took her out at the till and let her sit by my feet - only to find her trying to pull up on the trolley and pushing it into an old lady’s legs 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have a feeling that this child will be known as ‘spirited’ at school!

@hooraysuperworm sorry , realise this is an old post but this is exactly my 10 MO , could you let me know when you Lo started to pull up on things other than you and started walking? Did you use anything to help them ?
