Going “round the block” - what age?

DS is 8 and has just got a new bigger bike. So far he’s been fine tootling round the garden and to a limited extent on the pavement at the front of the house but otherwise he doesn’t get much of a chance to ride it. We live at the entrance to a looped street, in a quiet residential area, which obviously has no through traffic. I’m considering letting him ride his bike on his own around the loop sometimes so he can have a bit of independence and enjoy riding it that bit further. He’d be out of shouting distance but only a minute or so away at the most. There are side streets but all cul de sacs and very quiet (as I live at the entrance to the loop I know how many cars come out of the street and it’s very few!).

Is 8 ok to do this? He’s pretty sensible but also a normal 8-year-old boy with all that goes with that!

Sounds fine to me.

Depends on how sensible he is. I could let my eldest when she was 8 years old. My current 8 year old is away with the fairies a bit though, so she just plays out front where I can see her

Mine were 5 in a similar situation.

Our "round the block" is a path around our row of 10 terraced houses with low fences all the way so I can see them as they pass, we also have a window at either end of the livingroom facing the front and back path so they're not out of sight/hearing range for more than a minute or 2.

Mine just turned 6 and just started allowing it on scooter, not on a bike as dubious of his coordination to move fast enough with a car coming
