Is child benefit enough to raise a child on?

How much does your child cost you per week on average? (Not including food or increase in bills, please include ages!)

£20 ish pw - might cover nappies and baby food/formula early on. But not clothing, toys, equipment, childcare, activities ...

formerbabe · 11/08/2019 22:47

No, of course it's not enough. Does anyone think it's meant to be? Confused

Why do you not want to include food for the cost of raising a child? They have to eat.

Of course child benefit is not enough to cover the cost of a child but it’s not suppose to.

Gingerkittykat · 11/08/2019 22:54

How can you calculate the cost of a child? A bigger house, increased fuel bills, driving them about, clothes, furniture, hobbies, haircuts, presents, bottles of calpol........I could go on forever.

I've no idea what the bare minimum to give a child the essentials of life is if that is what you are looking for but a lot more than £20 per week.

Divgirl2 · 12/08/2019 02:55

Why would it be enough to raise a child on? That's an absurd idea.

happyasasandboy · 12/08/2019 03:05

Child benefit would cover less than one day of childcare per week (in some areas it would stretch to about one day per month!).

Child benefit covers a bus ticket to high school, a £10 sim only deal and £5 per week pocket money.
