3mth old not feeding

I'm getting concerned as my 3mth old, exclusively formula fed is not wanting any of his feeds. He is in a lovely little routine but for some reason over the past week he just hasn't been wanting feeds. He'll even turn away for his morning feed when he hasn't had anything practically all night (apart from a few oz at 3am). After a lot of perseverance I'm usually able to get a bottle of 5oz down him but it can take hours. He doesn't seem in pain or uncomfortable he just smacks hand away, turns head or plays with the teat, can't recall the last time he actually cried because he was hungry. Any thoughts?

GP today. Little formula for a week will mean serious dehydration.

Ring NHS helpline for out of hours appt straight away.

Call 111 today, that is not at all within the realms of normal and he needs checking out ASAP.

My boys were breast fed at that age so not sure it would be the same but every now and again I would have to give lots of small feeds rather than big feeds with longer gaps between. So you could try doing much smaller feeds of maybe two or three ounces every hour or two. Definitely call a doctor you could get one to call you back and talk over the phone and they'll let you know if you need to go in or call your health visitor.

My DS did something similar at this age so I switched to from normal Aptamil to Aptamil comfort milk until he was 6 months.

Does he have a cold at all? He also refused feeds a few months later when he had bronchiolitis.

Have you checked his breathing rate? Time it on your phone. Has he had a cold?
Wet nappies?
In any event, you need medical advice. He is so young.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts. I'm not really concerned about dehydration as like I say he does get his usual daily amount in him pretty much by the end of the day it just all takes longer than usual. Other than that he's fully alert and really happy, laughing, smiling and has his usual wet nappies and poos. I'll call the health visitors in the morning and see if they advise a trip to the Dr or not but he was checked only three weeks ago at A+E for a suspected stomach condition and was given the all clear so I guess it's worth going back to the GP just to follow up on this if he hasn't settled down tomorrow. Thanks

I would check with the GP.

Have you changed the teats on his bottles to faster flow ones?

Are their any other symptoms? You mentioned a suspected stomach problem, what was that all about?

My eldest started refusing feeds at about 3 months. He had bad reflux and refusing milk because of the pain. I had to wean him at 4 months.

Tryingtochillax · 11/08/2019 10:46

Hi, the Dr referred us as she couldn't rule out a condition called pyloric stenosis as he wasn't feeding well and was crying, bringing knees up and had projectile vomited a couple times. I suspected reflux and that is what the hospital went with, they gave him gaviscon but it made him really constipated so we came off it and he did seem ok for a few weeks and now as I say he doesn't seem uncomfortable like he did before just not fussed about milk. Did your little one show signs in reflux of pain?

Oh sorry and the bottle tests I think are ok as he did take a good feed on Wednesday and did 6oz in one go but good thinking I think I'll order some size 3's and try them anyway. Thanks

If he's ff he needs roughly 2.5 floz of formula per pound in weight in 24 hours. So a15 pound baby would need around 37.5 floz.

If you work it out like that, is he getting enough?

Tryingtochillax · 11/08/2019 16:10

No he's not getting enough, not sure of exact weight about 3wks ago he was 14lbs and he's only taking around 27 but I've just tried him on the next test size and he seemed to take it a bit better. Am hoping that his bedtime one will also go better and that may be the problem solved....will keep you posted! Thanks
