Sorry for another post. Not much luck on my other ones but maybe this one. Has anyone's child had an mri scan?

Hi, yes, my son had one a few years ago when he was 8. The play specialist at his hospital has made a video explaining what they are - I’ll try to find it for you

If you search RNOH Mini MRI on YouTube you should find it - I don’t seem able to share it due to a poor connection

Yes, my daughter has had five or six (on her lower back), the first when she was about seven. What would you like to know?

chinateapot · 08/08/2019 08:23

Yes mine has - most recent one lasted nearly 2 hours. She’s 6. Play specialists have been awesome. Hearing the sounds first (you can find them on YouTube) really helpful. Some hospitals have facilities for kids to watch dvds in the scanner but not all.
Any specific questions?

Hi, not sure how old your child is but this might help

Sexnotgender · 08/08/2019 09:21

Yes my daughter has had a couple.

mother2one18 · 08/08/2019 10:52

Also do u stay in hospital after? Can she eat or is there a waiting time from when she wakes up? And how long does the sleep last?

My 9 month old had an MRI when he was 4 months old. He was put under and it was completely fine. He was groggy the next couple of days and he stayed in hospital but he would've needed to stay anyway as he was unwell. All fine. But he was so ill that an MRI seemed like nothing. I hope your little one is ok.

Sexnotgender · 08/08/2019 11:04

She’ll have a general anaesthetic. Length of scan depends on what it is for.
She should be able to eat and drink soon after coming round from the anaesthetic. Usually just sips of water in recovery as they can be nauseous. Food when they’re back on the ward.
They’ll probably want her to stay in hospital for a couple hours to ensure no effects from anaesthetic.

I think the time it takes varies according to the body part, how large a body area is involved, and at what intervals the images are to be taken. (In my daughter's case it took about 30 mins for the five lumbar vertebrae with images about 4mm apart).

My daughter was awake for all of her MRIs so I can't comment on how it works with mild sedation (which is just to ensure the child stays still so that they get clear pictures) but I would be very surprised if you couldn't be with her. I have always been encouraged to stay and hold DD's hand!

It's to see if she has any scarring on her brain

My son has had a couple of MRI's when he was 10 months and 15 months under general. He was always fine. It took an hour and other being a little groggy you would not have known. We were always sent home the same day with no problems.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 08/08/2019 11:46

I'm very sorry to hear that OP Flowers and hope the MRI at least gives you some answers. When is it scheduled for?

HoppingPavlova · 08/08/2019 11:53

I wish I could of knew if she had a stroke or I could of done something different

Please, please, please never think like this. This is not your fault and nothing you did or did not do caused this. It’s absolutely pointless trying to find fault, especially with yourself.

mother2one18 · 08/08/2019 15:05

About three 4 weeks from now, she starts physio next Friday ☹️ just feel so bad for her and she doesn't deserve all of this

mother2one18 · 08/08/2019 15:08

A stroke though? I don't understand how that could of happened ☹️ she hasn't had any head trauma either

OP posts:
Benjispruce · 08/08/2019 15:14

I suppose it could have have happened if a blood vessel hadn’t formed properly and bled. Must be a worrying time for you . Good luck.

mother2one18 · 08/08/2019 15:21

Thank you x
