My love affair is over....

I was so in love with bambineos but their absorbancy for my 3 month old ds is just RUBBISH. My pocket nappies all hold up for about 3 hours but to get the same from the bambineos (which are size 2) I have to put in two boosters which is just too bulky.

I am thinking of selling them on and replacing them with pocket nappies - does anyone know if I am right in thinking if they don´t suit him now, I might as well change them or do you think he might grow into them and stop peeing so much?? lol

I am not rubbishing them as a nappy in general, I hasten to add, I really really like them, my ds is just a super wetter and they don´t seem to suit..

I think that if he has only just become a "heavy wetter" then there is a chance it's just a phase, is he having a gowth spurt and feeding more? If so then he will also be weeing more IYKWIM. Maybe hang on to them for a bit longer. To make bamboo nappies slim less fabric is used say compared to a bulky cotton tots, therefore although the bamboo nappy is more absorbent than a nappy made of the similar ammount of cotton it may not be as absorbent as a "bulkier" cotton nappy.

maveta · 02/08/2007 08:56

no, he´s pretty much always been a heavy wetter.. I´ve just been holding out and trying different things to see if I could make it work. They just don´t seem up to it from him and I´m changing him every 1-2 hours when he´s in two parters! If it weren´t for the pockets I may have given up on cloth, it´s just a hell of a lot of changing! (and laundry)

BUT the pockets aren´t so great for his bfed poos- lately he´s only going once a week or so, so it´s not a big deal but I´m sure this is a phase and he´ll be back to one every few days. The pockets DON´T contain the poo but the two parters nearly always do (though not always). I used disposables when we went away last week and I was so impressed at how they contained two huge poos kind of contrary to what everyone else says about disposables though...

So am in a quandry as two parters don´t seem absorbant enough at the slimness I want but pockets don´t hold the poo! what to do? HELP!

I agree with curlywurly. DS2 used to wee for britain as a little baby and pretty much the only size one nappy that I loved was unbleached cotton tots bots. By the time he was in size twos (about 5 months old) I branched out in to slimmer nappies like rainbow bots and the like. They still seemed to last as long so he must have been weeing less. I sort of know what you mean about the Bambineos though. We have two of them and I don't dislike them but always choose the bamboozles over them if I need a bamboo nappy as they are wider and less fiddly to put on.

Oh no

As much as I love the bambineos, I am leaning towards my bumble more and more lately.

bagpuss · 02/08/2007 09:08

Ah, Bumbles are gooood .

claireybee · 02/08/2007 11:06

I found that when they were still a bit big on my dd they tended to bunch between the legs as she moved and wee used to come straight out the sides-could that be what is happening? It is annoying that the slimmer fitting nappies aren't as reliable in general-I do lean towards bulkier nappies (bamboozles, bambeasy etc) when going out and about just cos i know they are less likely to let me down

MrsDoolittle · 02/08/2007 11:15

I think you'll be lucky to find one nappy that suits you all the way through. I have found that different nappies suit better when their younger and other nappies when they start to stretch out as they get older.

I have bumbles and more recently bambeasys.
The bambeasys are exceptional - and I've tried a few.

Flame - I fell out of love with the bumgenius, they simply weren't absorbant enough and the velcro gave up. An expensive mistake

Have you treid bambeasys yet?

maveta · 02/08/2007 12:00

Oh I don't know what to do!! Claireybee - i don't think so because they are soaked through, not just wet in places iykwim.

Maybe I should sell the bamboozles and buy some bambeasys? Then I would have about 50% pockets and 50% two parters. We mainly used bimbles when he was a newborn and they were great until he started outgrowing them and soaking through them in an hour So maybe the bambeasys would be good for us..

Oh please someone advise me what to do, I kind of get the whole idea that one type might not suit all the way through but I can't keep chopping and changing, buying and selling. It's too time consuming and dh is going to get harder to convince that this is all a good idea...

Your baby is only 3 months old.
It's true growth spurts will adjust the amount he wees, he'll also change his fit with nappies.
Try a poppered bambeasy, honestly they are so easy. I use huggles at night, although I did boost them at night when I was nightime bf, as soon as he started going through he has never been as wet and I don't boost them anymore.
At 3 months I'm guessing you'll still beable to popper then bumble down, very cute. Boost with good microfibre cloth if you have to.

I use bambeasy/bumbles during the day and don't boost them atall.

I have loads of pockets nappies but I've found them more trouble than they were worth and I couldn't wash them as hot as I would like because of the different colours and fabrics.
So I went back to affordable, plain and very easy.

Don't make things hard for yourself, you have enough to do

(Although I have all the Motherease wrap designs)

maisiemog · 02/08/2007 13:12

I remember boosting my little boy's prefolds quite a bit from 3-6 months, using hemp boosters and microfibre cloths. Also I am pretty sure that we changed him every two hours through the day because most sources recommended that duration.
Of course there was more frequent washing and we were rotating about 36 prefolds for the first six months - that's why we used prefolds. I don't think I could have afforded that number of fitted nappies.
If you have a pocket system or use microfibre you could get away with fewer.
The problem with bamboo nappies at this age is the drying time, you are going to need quite a few or tumble them all the time to ensure you have nappies ready when you need them.
I haven't tried baminio nappies - they are very popular, but I do remember seeing a couple of reviews on my nappy review which echoed your views - that they weren't absorbent enough for heavy wetters. I think the same comments applied to to the bamboo bumgenius, the bamboo used is quite thin and lightweight and the microfibre isn't absorbent enough. It's tricky getting faster drying and absorbency.
I hope you find a way round this, and you might be able to go back to the bambinios when your ds is older.

Flamestorm · 02/08/2007 13:58

Why do I see me with a bambeasy soon?

MrsD for ending the bumgenius affair... its weird how we go through the phases!

maveta · 02/08/2007 14:49

MrsDoolittle - that´s exactly it - I don´t want it to be harder than it has to be which is why if I do sell on my bambineo´s I want to replace them with something that´s going to do us and not have to change again in a couple of months.

Thanks Maisiemog - I can´t really afford to hang on to the bambineo´s just to have them lying in the back of a drawer so maybe I will sell them and get bambeasy´s. Drying time isn´t much of an issue as I live in Spain and especially now while he´s going through so many the roof terrace where I dry my nappies is like a bloomin´ dryer!

LOL Flame - it´s a bit like that, isn´t it?

Can anyone with experience tell me if they do think a bambeasy will be more absorbant than a bambineo?

OP posts:
MrsWaggsnapps · 02/08/2007 15:26

Could it be worth trying a wider nappy? (two part I mean) Bambineos are quite slim in the crotch (bit like Tots Bots), maybe soemthing like a Sandy's or bamboo Motherease onesize would do the trick (I think the bamboo is out in August, hang on it is August???).

Flamestorm · 02/08/2007 15:56

It could be - you can fold the booster of the bambeasy differently, and it'd wider so you might get a better absorbancy type thing goign on.

maveta · 02/08/2007 17:27

ok..food for thought, thanks.. might give a bambeasy a shot and see what happens..

maisiemog · 02/08/2007 17:32

Lucky you!!
I have heard good things about the baby beehinds - good absorbency, and it's a birth to potty. It has a super long booster and another smaller one, so you can vary the absorbency. You can buy bamboo or hemp in that nappy.
I'm not sure about the bambeasy - did you check my blog, there might be a review there, under bumble or bambeasy, you can use the search box at the top to find it.
Bamboozles have quite good reviews, although they seem to have a problem with some of the fabric going threadbare.
Hemp is slim and absorbent and you can get some lovely hemp nappies on forums like diaper swappers. Sugar peas nappies are great I think plush pants sells them.
Clwt-Twt Bambw is a nice budget nappy, made in wales it's half bamboo and half cotton terry and the absorbency is very good. And the lady who makes them is just lovely and so helpful.
I hope you find something you like.
Do quick flips come in bamboo - Flame??

Roskva · 02/08/2007 17:52

Sorry if I'm butting in, but I can't resist adding my tuppence hapenny worth on nappies.

I second the clwt twt bambw - dd has been in hers since she was about 5 months, they're still going strong, they are lovely and absorbent, BUT they take a life time to dry. Some of them have been on the line in bright sunshine since about 11 this morning, and they are still nowhere near dry.

I have a bambeasy, and I don't find it any more absorbent than my bambineo, but having said that I have lost its own booster, and stuff any booster that comes to hand into it. It takes longer to dry than the bambineo.

There is a bamboo quick flip, and it is really nice.

I have to say, I don't find the microfibre insert that comes with fuzzis particularly good - I use prefolds wrapped round a hemp booster in them. It does make them a little more bulky, but they do last a lot longer, even on dd who produces copious quantities of wee.

Flamestorm · 02/08/2007 18:21

They do indeed... and soon with poppers

(Really will sort out those pics for you soon!!)
